Clerks - am I supposed to like this?

Oh hey, sorry I haven’t been back to the thread. My ears just finished bleeding from the Boeing 767 that went over me at about head level.

:stuck_out_tongue:

I think I’ve read that it was the licensing of the music that sucked up a huge chunk of the budget.

I don’t know if I’m being whooshed, but YOUR user name, deliberate or not, is also a joke from Clerks…

Specifically, this one.

That’s one of the dangers of being a roofer. That and getting blown up by mobsters.

You should have seen the list of usernames the SDMB administration said “no” to before they gave me this one. :dubious:

Put me down as a big fan of Clerks. And the whole story of how it got made.

link is safe, BTW

I remember I rented Clerks when I was about 13. I was a bit ahead of myself trying to watch “important” or “cool” movies - and this is one my mom decided to watch with me. My parents are not square at all (mom had me watch stuff like Animal House and Monty Python because she loved it when she was young) but Clerks was the only movie she asked me EVER to please turn off.

I just rented it again a year or so later. Probably a better idea because by then I understood the jokes :stuck_out_tongue: Then came Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and the rest as they were released. Skipped the Jlo one or whatever. I overall dig but don’t worship.

No kidding. I had to give up on any variation of goatfelcher…

And when Smith got that Mallrats was the result. Perhaps the worst of the Jersey movies. Hell, even Kevin makes jokes about how bad it was. It did introduce a number of actors who have reappeared numerous times in his movies (Ben Affleck, Jason Lee). Give it a try if you like, but if you didn’t like Clerks you won’t like this one.

I’ve seen it twice, liked it a lot, thought it was funny. In 1990 I was a 40 year-old boomer.

Go figure.

Haven’t seen any other KS movies.
.

You really should see Chasing Amy. It is by far Smith’s best film.

Awesome.:stuck_out_tongue:

Ebert put it on his Top 10 list for the year it came out.

No way.

Best line ever:

“In a row?”

I’ve not seen Clerks, but have seen a few of Kevin Smith’s other films, including Chasing Amy. Did not like any of them. And, from what I can tell, I don’t like the man himself either. He seems to be somewhat of a blowhard.

So many of my contemporary geeks seem to love him, but once again I stand apart.

I bought on Laserdisc (shudder) soon after it was released. Thought it was hilarious, but that was back then. I am nearly 50 now. Still makes me laugh, but not so much. I am old;)

How do you know you don’t like them if you don’t finish them? Sure, I’m not raring to go to watch Clerks from these reviews, but I wouldn’t walk out halfway through. If I’ve committed to watching it, I’m going to. Sure, Life’s short, but I waste more time here than I would spend on getting an informed opinion of the movie.

Now games are another story. They take a lot longer, and you can usually go find all the cutscenes online.

Thank you sir. I loved your self-titled movie, though I had to deal with the most rude, profane man while ordering it.

I loved it, it’s simply my kind of thing. I’d rather listen to hours of dialogue than watch a series of explosions/car chases.

And I’m not some Kevin Smith super-fan either. In fact I only really love Clerks. (Chasing Amy was okay. Dogma was terrible. Haven’t seen anything else.)

I never got around to seeing it - and after reading this thread, I felt myself siding with the haters - but I have to say, this clip was pretty amusing.
mmm

I usually try so-called “famous” movies at least twice. You never know, maybe something that didn’t appeal to you the first time will grab you the second time. Still, I am not heartbroken - it’s called a cult movie for a reason, right?
