When you perform a search or make a post, the interim screen gives you this apparent opt-out.
At times when the board’s been really slow, and that screen just seems to hannnnnnnnggggg there, I’ve hit clicked that link and all it seems to do is halt movement, i.e. the same thing the “Stop” button does.
But why include that as an option? I mean I’ve got a stop button.
Why not, then, have something read, “You probably have nothing else of interest to add to these boards tonight. Please click here to be re-directed to another website that you’ve bookmarked. Maybe some porn.”
Now that is something I could use.
In all honesty, though, I just don’t understand the point of that “opt-out” when it doesn’t re-direct you anywhere. It just stops things. I could just as easily do that with my “Stop” button.
The “Click here if you don’t want to wait any longer” does not do the same thing as the stop button.
That link is offered so that if your browser does not support the auto-redirect you can manually click on the link. It is also useful if the auto-redirect request is stuck or hangs, that way when you click it manually it re-initiates it.
What happens when you click that link is that it re-initiates a call to the result page (it’s more like a refresh button). So, consider the following scenario:
You have a slow connection. The time it takes for the results page to appear is 30 secs. At 20 secs you get impatient and click the link manually. This re-initializes a request to the results page, so your timer goes back to 0 secs… so you have to wait another 30 secs before you see a results page.
This is why you are confusing it with the stop button’s function. Because, to you, it appears to just halt the loading, while in actuality it’s just resending a request for the results page.
On a faster connection you will see the difference. If you click the stop button on that page it’ll just sit there. If you manually click the link it’ll take you to the results page.
