Clinton v Trump - The Stretch Run Thread

I’d probably put the grenade that was thrown at W in the same category. Not a shooting attempt, but still a deadly weapon. It doesn’t seem to be remembered much, I guess since the guy sucked at throwing it and then it didn’t even work.

Yes, remarkable … but their occasional negligence has scared me half to death several times in the past few years.

Assassinations were fashionable at one time as the primary outlet for crazy people who wanted to be famous. Then the mass shooting came into vogue, although it’s primacy was briefly delayed by hijackings in the 1970s.

Crazy people have just figured out that assassinations are hard, hijackings are nearly impossible now, but mass shootings are easy as pie.

That’s my hypothesis anyway. But I think one thing is still true. If someone is determined to kill the President and has the intelligence to plan it decently, he’ll probably succeed. I don’t think the Secret Service can stop a competent assassin without a lot of luck.

They go for lower-profile and less-well guarded targets like Gabrielle Giffords. Or bombing marathons.

Trump thinks he’s found proof the election is rigged: “certain groups” are being allowed to vote when I guess he believes they should be turned away and not alowed to vote… is that what he’s meant by " rigging" all this time?

Don’t forget the guy who smuggled in a pair of shoes.

I remember the Secret Service catching a little bit of flack for that, because it could have been something dangerous thrown. But mostly jokes.

Bush had reflexes, didn’t he? Good thing too, what if it had been a rock?

Here is a New York Magazine article on the Clinton Foundation receiving a $1 Million gift while Hillary was Secretary of State: Clinton Foundation Accepted $1 Million Donation From Qatar.

Apparently he didn’t know about it until much later.

Ducked that first one. Recall someone at work commenting on those reflexes. And someone else saying he had to have them - he hunted with Cheney. Hey, I said it was mostly jokes.

I don’t like Trump, but when the Secret Service tells a candidate to get off the stage, the candidate needs to get off the stage. He didn’t do anything wrong by leaving, and I’m tired of the accusations of cowardice over him doing so.

Actually, they don’t even give him/her a choice. They drag 'em out if needed.
I wouldn’t expect any candidate to be expected to stand and take a bullet.

You know, he can fire back or not as is his choice, but God I hate arguments on Twitter. It’s a vehicle for short messages for teenagers and dull-witted celebrities. Just link to a goddamn blog post.

By tomorrow it will become the story of a Clinton assassin armed with heavy artillery, and Donald fighting him Rambo-style.

They’ll probably jump in the opposite direction.

Nobody is faulting Trump for leaving the stage. The criticism is for identifying someone as a threat because of a sign, and later misrepresenting the incident as an assassination attempt.

Nation Mourns Failed Assassination Attempt.

Film at eleven.

I read "He promptly turned on his tail and fled… " as an insult for leaving. I think that’s a very reasonable interpretation. And that same sentiment has been expressed on other forums, too. Even to directly calling him a coward and other such terms.

Yup, I think SOP is that they barely even speak to the protectee in that circumstance, they just grab and (if necessary) physically carry him off. Get him to safety and apologize for any scratches and bruises later.
