I don’t think ‘ol Homer is hurting the cause of Christianity any more than, oh, say the Europeans who came over to North America and wiped out the natives in the name of God. How about racist whites who lynched blacks in Mississippi in the name of God? Why don’t you take a listen to your Congressperson who uses “God’s word” as an excuse to pass laws restricting homosexuals’ rights? Priests who molest little boys and the churches that cover up their actions?
If you’re looking for people who give Christianity a bad name, I think you’ve got much bigger fish to fry than Homer.

I know that Homer didn’t physically hurt anyone, but he did claim to be a Christian in spite of his very hateful, un-CHRIST-like statements. EVERY person who does that hurts other Christians.

You must realize that we could argue the fact that the actions stated were not truly motivated by “the name of God” --more like, in the “name of SELF”. Regardless of that though, people hear these things then assume that all of Christianity is a joke. “Why would I want to be a Christian? They’re just a bunch of hate-mongering, murdering, child-molesting jerks.”
If you really are a Christian and believe that some day you will stand in judgement before God, then you also believe that you will be called on to answer for how you represented him when you were on Earth.
I’m not a really great Christian either, but I seem to recall that the Bible talks about those who commit evil in the name of God: “it would be better for those people if they had never been born” (not sure where, but I think that’s right).
Just because there are worse examples of this doesn’t mean that Homer should get away with it unchallenged.
Why the hell would this chill you to the bone? There’s nothing wrong with this. To tear me down, to limit my future, to take away possibilities in my life, that I could get, the qualifications to get, and, by golly, the right to get, simply to build someone else up, because they are part of a minority?
How right is it that I would be denied a job because a company didn’t meet it’s quotient to get the correct percentage of male/female white/asian/black/hispanic workers? Does it matter that I’m more qualified? Does it matter that I’d do a better job? NO. They need three more black workers, two more asians, and four more hispanics to meet quota. So someone less qualified than me gets the job.
Is it wrong to be angry that I cannot get financial aid for my schooling because I’m not black/asian/hispanic? I find aid for people who are poor/single parent/no parent fine, but GEEZ! 2k a year because you’re black and going to college?! What the hell!
And you know what? If someone put out a scholarship that was, say, $250 a year for going to school and being white, it’d be racist.
We try SO HARD to erase racism, to make this a classless society, to raise everyone to the same level, but this stuff makes it WORSE! HOW could this make the situation better?
How is it better to have a less qualified worker, simply because he’s a certain race?
How is it better to accept a less qualified person into your school, simply because he’s a certain race?
How is it better to deny aid to someone who needs it, simply because he’s not certain race?

Please offer specific sites (approx times, places, etc.) that each of these offenses were committed against you. You sound like a horribly persecuted person. Your civil rights sound like they have been violated. So if you could please offer up the places and times where:
Youwere denied admission to the Girl Scouts,
You tried to get into an all-female academy and were denied admission. (I’m talking about enrolling in the academy, not late night panty raids)
You were denied employment because you were white (and the name and qualifications, please, of the minority who was hired in your stead),
You tried to start an all-white college and were branded a racist
…and so on.
Otherwise, it might look like all of these injustices done to you were concocted in your head. You know, theoretical counter-arguments to the real sufferings of other minorities. And that would just make you look nuts.

Great hopping electrons! I can’t believe I am about to do this. But it looks like I have actually found a subject where I agree with some of what Homer was saying, however badly he expressed it.
Our society should be color blind, period.
In my opinion that little box on college applications where you are supposed to indicate your race shouldn’t be there. Once again, our neighbors to the south in California are ahead of us. They took the logical step and dismantled affirmative action. A lot of other stuff they do is nutty but this one makes sense.
Affirmative action - what a lovely sugar coated phrase for institutionalized racism. Wait, I hear the maddeded Pit howling for my blood. So I’ll break it to you real easy. When you are 17, standing on the street, with no place to go, and you can’t get a job because you have no skills, not getting into school is more than just an aggrevation. Been there, it’s no fun.
So OK, there are more applicants than there are classrooms. So we have to compete. I can live with that if it’s straight up. But when I found that the deck was stacked against me because of the color of my skin, I was real pissed off. Why? Because I have been hearing all my life from minorities of every kind that color discrimination is wrong, and I happen to beleive that also. So I was bent of of shape to find that discriminating is wrong… except against me.
Where was my theoretical advantage? I wasn’t born with a goddam silver spoon in my mouth. Nobody gave me any breaks because I was white. I started out on my own with a license plate as a home address.
In school, I constantly ran into people who could not speak or write a sentence of correct english. Nice folks, but if they had been white they never would have made it in. I, on the other hand had to apply to a bunch of schools even though I maxed out the SAT tests (National Merit Scholar award) and had a high GPA.
In school two years later, after two hours of standing in line (which made me late for my part time job), I see a minority person breeze up to a nearby window wearing gold on his hands, around his neck, and on his ears. I noticed he parked a nice sports car outside. He was being shown how to fill out a special financial aid package that totalled nearly twice what I was elegible for. Even the financial aid lady looked disgusted.
Affirmative action is bullshit.

I don’t know if affirmative action is a good idea because I don’t know enough about the USA culture in depth. Here in the UK we have some anti-discrimination stuff, which is intended to give everyone a fair chance.

Perhaps you could look around at all the rich and powerful people in society (USA and UK). The vast majority are white and male. Judges, politicians, businessmen etc. Now there are historical reasons for this, but please don’t make asinine remarks about this group being disadvantaged.
I assume the idea of affirmative action is based on numbers. Suppose there are 100 places at the best ‘something’ e.g. college. Assume all of these go to the white males from the well-off suburban background, whose fathers have contacts there. So if you reserve 3 places for those whose ‘faces don’t fit’, you’re removing the 98th, 99th and 100th best ‘white males’ to make room for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd best ‘others’.
I think the discrimination you’re feeling is in fact simply that e.g. employers prefer intelligent polite staff. I’m afraid some of your posts give exactly the opposite impression.
What if we just establish a set of reasonably objective acceptance standards and look at applications without knowing race or religion?
Then those 100 slots would be filled by the best students regardless of race, sex, or religion.

Girl Next Door, obviously, I’m not referring specifically and only to myself. Just because it’s not happening to me personally doesn’t mean it’s not happening to someone like me. You know this is true. Why the hell do you deny it? You don’t have to conform. You don’t have to blindly agree, to eat what you are fed. You can think for yourself, occasionally.
How about this? You can be outraged over female circumcision. You can be outraged over the fact that, in most arabic countries, men completely control every aspect of their wives and daughters lives. You can be outraged that they are forced to wear clothing, head to toe, showing not an inch of skin. You can be outraged that the husband has the right to kill his wife.
Yet, none of this will ever happen to you. This, that I speak of, there is a 99% chance that some of it will happen to me. I’ve already not gotten scholarships because of my race. I’m sure when I go into the business world, I will be denied at least one job because of ‘quota’. Why can you be outraged over something that will never happen to you, but if I am the slightest bit irritated over something that there is a distinct possibility of happening to me, I’m taunted, called a troll, and degraded? What is wrong with people? What is wrong with this country?
