Coachella festival! Anyone going?

http://coachella.com/main.html

Words fail me. Radiohead, the Pixies, Death Cab for Cutie, Wilco, The Flaming Lips. Not only does God exist, but he’s an indie rock fan as well.

I think I can swing this. I’ve just found out that the journalism school I’ve applied for won’t begin classes until May 7th, giving me five days to fly from Indio, CA to Saskatoon, pick up my stuff, and trek out to London, Ontario. I will probably be extremely tired (and likely broke, as well) but it’ll be worth it.

Is anyone else planning on going to Coachella? If there are any other Dopers making the trek, we should arrange to all meet up. We could all wear top-hats, or have a secret greeting like “puppy chow” to distinguish us from the rest of the unwashed masses. Or we could just meet by the Radiohead stage. (Ack! Radiohead! Live! Gah!)

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go resume my delirious, girlish swooning.

I’d love to, after having been completely blown away by Radiohead’s performance at Madison Square Garden last year, but flying all the way to California is going to be… difficult, at best. Still… Radiohead, Flaming Lips, Wilco, Trail of Dead… gaaaahhhh. Best lineup EVER.

I’m seriously considering it.

Any general information or advice from Coachella veterans about the venue? Anybody know how many stages they’re going to have? I predict all the bands I want to see will be playing simultaneously.

It’s a fantastic venue. Huge, grassy polo fields, beautiful mountains nearby. Cool people. It’s a great weekend. It’ll be warm during the day, but probaby not too hot. At night it gets pretty cool. 4 or 5 stages/tents. Getting in & out can be a pain; the streets aren’t really big enough to handle all the traffic. And sometimes the line to enter the venue gets backed up. I’d suggest going early to avoid as much of this as possible. At worst you’re hanging out on the grass, maybe drinking a beer. At best you discover a new bad you like or have fun dancing in the DJ tent.

I’ll be there both days (my 4th time!).

Great, now I’m craving a date shake.

I’m planning to go both days, or at the very least Saturday (PIXIES!). I’ve yet to actually buy tickets and arrange for hotel, etc. I guess I should get with friends so we can actually start arranging everything.

Yep, got my tickets for Saturday. I have a friend with a place in Joshua Tree and we’re going to be camping out on his property Friday night.

It would have been a bitchin’ all-Pixies weekend for us, what with them playing here in Davis April 29th, but tickets sold out in less than five minutes. I never even got close…

Last year my 3 friends and I roadtripped to Coachella from Minnesota… IT WAS THE BEST! A magical week. I am trying my hardest to go again this year.

I think what I was most worried about before going was what the vibe would be like. I am turned off by Corporate America and I thought the big business nature of the concert would stifle the experience of seeing all these “underground” bands do a live show.

It turned out not to be a problem at all. There isn’t in your face banners and advertisments* everywhere you look, no one handing out stupid flyers or coupons, and even the vending was sparse and never an eyesore.

When you are inside the Polo Grounds it really is just about the music, and you can tell that is what everyone else is feeling too.

*ok, i do remember looking up and seeing that airplane flying around with the giant Radiohead banner but that was ok with me

The Pixies are coming to Davis? Damn, I never hear about anything until the opportunity for tickets has passed! I’m still mad about missing Ani DiFranco back in October.

The Beckwalls will be in attendance on Day One. Tickets arrived in the mail just recently. Mr. Beckwall was there a few years ago and saw The Strokes, Tenacious D and Oasis. I haven’t been yet, so I am just looking forward to the experience. Lots of music all at once is how they do it, so you have to pick and choose who to see. Radiohead will obviously be the last ones to perform Sat. night. Take lots of sunscreen, it will be toasty warm on May 1st and 2nd.

BTW, we live approximately 30 minutes from the Polo Grounds.

Man- I held out for so long for someone to go with me. No one from Vegas wanted to go and I didnt want to miss the Pixies. But I ended up not ordering any tickets. I wonder if there are still tickets left??

Im worried about the vibe, I havent been to too many outdoor festivals- save for one- the 1992 Lollapalooza in Phoenix.

The polo grounds are soooo huge that tickets probably won’t sell out. You could get tickets when you get there and save the Ticketmaster charges.

Hotels fill up fast, you might not be able to find one.

I believe that Goldenvoice (the promoters) have turned down offers of coporate sponsorship. It is about the music. I would go even if I’ve never heard of anyone on the bill. A great, diverse lineup. Always a great vibe.

Well, there are some corporate logos at the bottome of their website and I remember a Playstation 2 arcade last year, as well as an URB magazine tent.

But all that stuff is so in the background, not the usual stuff it in your face marketing I now expect everywhere I look in this country.

BUMP

I refuse to believe this is all the interest this board has in Coachella. FYI, tickets for Saturday actually DID sell out. I guess the place is going to be packed. So who’s going? Who are you really looking forward to seeing?

Wilco is off the lineup now, but I’m still looking forward mostly to Belle and Sebastian, Air, and Radiohead (of course). Oh, and about a million other amazing bands.

But, but, what about the Carrot Festival in the Coachella Valley?

(Warner Brothers fans will know what I am talking about!)

Well, I’ll be there. It was originally going to be my graduation present to myself, but then I found out that I’m not graduating on time. So now it’s my “I’m broke and still have no degree” present to myself.

Individual Saturday tickets are gone, butI think two-day passes are still available.

I’m most looking forward to:
Paul van Dyk
Kraftwerk
Ferry Corsten
Air
Mogwai
2 Many DJs
Mindless Self Indulgence
Le Tigre
Danny Howells
Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra
