Cocktails

Since it is getting warm outside, I will take a margarita, regular, no fancy fruity flavors and not frozen. Shaken, not blended, salt on the rim and a lime on the side.

If it were cold outside, I would order a Black Russian with the best vodka available.

A friend of mine made a proper margarita for me. Simple syrup, lime juice, some fantastic tequila. Shaken over ice. It was amazing.

I normally stick to vodka tonics (with diet tonic if I can get it) since I know they won’t give me a migraine.

I tried an Aviation recently, and it is a very nice cocktail.

I used to only like Mojito and Caiparinha, but ever since I met the Watermelon Man in Berlin, I try to get that whenever I can.

Obviously, I’ll have to try that.

It is an entirely different experience, isn’t? So good and refreshing without any danger of a brain freeze.

My go-to is Canadian Club, rocks, but it’s been a bit wet and dreary lately so I’ll have a Dark & Stormy.

More like father or grandfather really.

But yeah, a well made Sazerac is a true delight.

I’m partial to Papa Doble/La Floridita daiquris (white rum, maraschino liqueur, grapefruit juice, lime & simple syrup/sugar), “real” margaritas (lime juice, tequila, Cointreau (or a good substitute like Luxardo Triplum), and simple syrup or sugar.

A drink called the “Lion’s Tail” is pretty good too- it’s basically a whiskey sour with pimento dram (allspice liqueur) in it.

And the Last Word is surprisingly good, even though on paper it sounds awful. Equal parts gin, green Chartreuse, Maraschino Liqueur and lime juice.

Even if I hadn’t drunk about a thousand of those, I’d still think that the recipe sounds great!

Lemme add my newest obsession, the Bijou: Gin, Chartreuse, sweet vermouth and bitters. Mmmmmmm.

And there’s this offering from Ron Jeremy (safe for work I think but will spoiler it anyway, because, you know, Ron Jeremy):

If you like mojitos you’ll also probably like a Moscow Mule. I love both in the summer.

Spearmint, not mint in general, which I would associate with menthol and menthone.

I like a good Bijou… I just have to plan ahead to get the sweet vermouth often enough so that it’s fresh when I decide to have one, or a Manhattan or a host of other sweet vermouth drinks.

It’s sort of lame, but I do like a Dark and Stormy (dark rum, ginger beer and lime juice over ice) that’s heavy on the lime, and it doesn’t have to be Gosling’s- just about any aged rum will make a fine rendition. I’m partial to Bundaberg ginger beer, but Gosling’s and Blenheim are also terrific.

Well, if you have the taste for ginger beer and lime, why not try an Italian Buck? It’s my hot summer day go-to. Cunard, Amaro Montenegro, lime juice and ginger beer.

We love Carpano Antica in our Manhattans but another favorite vermouth for them is Dolin Rouge. It’s not quite as sweet and perhaps a bit more of the spices. Goes great with a good rye.

Speaking of Dolin, their dry and blanc vermouths are great as well for gin and vodka martinis. A nice summer martini is Dolin Blanc, vodka and a bit of orange bitters.

Normally, I drink whisky only in the cold months. Yesterday my friend cracked open a bottle of 15 year of Tullamore Dew, apparently not available in the U.S. That was some smooth Tully!

Summer is for beer, mostly but if you like a Mojito, try a Caipirinha. Dangerously delicious!

Blood orange margarita. Sub blood orange for half of the lime juice. I wish blood oranges were available in the summer.

Macaroni Grill has a Blood Orange Cosmo that is quite nice. I wonder what they use for the oj out of season?

Stranger

As the poster who pitted Stranger for being too damn awesome (and I still suspect Stranger is a they, not a him, so impressive are the posts) I just want to say that Stranger’s view on this, as on so much else, is the correct one, and I am even more bummed. Is there nothing they can’t do?!

All of you are wrong. Sad to see so many decent posters led down the road to Perdition. As much as I love bourbon, a proper Manhattan demands rye. Not a high-rye bourbon, a rye. So let it be written. So let it be done.

As for hot summer weather, which has finally arrived in SoCal - the drink of the day is a Blood Orange Vodka Tonic. Rocks glass full of ice, a healthy measure of Skyy Blood Orange vodka, a dash of orange bitters, a squeeze of lime. Fill with tonic water and enjoy.

For bonus points, the soundtrack is Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds.
