My current favorite vermouth for a rye Manhattan is Hammer and Tongs’ L’Afrique. It is also quite pleasant by itself. Also nice using a high rye bourbon but I’m a heathen.
I think its flavors are overpowered though by my favorite gins in a martini.

I’d be all for it, but Cynar is Satan’s ball sweat in liqueur form. No thanks.

If that is true then all I have to say is ”Hail Satan." Cynar is glorious even neat.
ETA: looking back at my original post, all I can think is, “Cunard?! For god’s sake Autocorrect, get your shit together.”
Pimm’sCup is my go-to summer drink; I just made a batch today. You can keep the mint in or leave it out (I’m not a fan of mint; YMMV). You should put in the strawberries and cucumber because then it counts as salad.
We don’t have the same sparkling lemonade as in the UK, so I use a mixture of Pelligrino Limonata and diet ginger ale. Polar Half and Half soda is also good, if you can’t get the Pelligrino.
I was going to include a recipe, but the ones I found online all call for Sprite or 7-up. Don’t use them, they are too damn sweet.
Oh, the brain freeze doesn’t bother me (in fact on a hot day…). The difference for me in this one was the quality of the tequila and the use of fresh lime juice and simple syrup, rather than a mix (which is the norm when you’re out and gives me instant heartburn).
I’ve recently started adding rhubarb bitters to my gin and tonic. I highly recommend it.
In his defense, a manhattan made with J&B was emphatically not what he wanted.
Probably the nicest cocktail I had was that one where they put butter in the whiskey (Oban 12, neat).
Pimm’s cup is great; it works pretty well with the Sunkist sparkling lemonade, even if it’s not strictly accurate. The “lemonade” in the UK is pretty much like 7up
And anyway, if you want to hook it up authentically, you pretty much have to build a fruit salad in your glass or punch bowl - apples, strawberries, oranges, cucumbers, etc…
