Coconut M&Ms

While stocking up on candy bars at Rite Aid the other day, I spotted a new flavor of M&Ms: coconut. One of those limited edition flavor variants the candy manufacturers have been rolling out in recent years. I love coconut, love M&Ms, had to have 'em.

Well…they’re okay. I was imagining a center of coconut paste like the filling of a Mounds bar, but these are just slightly larger M&Ms suffused with an artificial coconut flavor. No trace of actual coconut is present.

Anyone else tried them?

Any other limited candy flavor variations to report on?

My mother bought those and some mint ones.

I’m like you, I was all over the coconut ones. But they were disappointing. Chemically coconut flavor. Yuk.

I like plain ol’ M&Ms much better.

That sounds disapointing. I’m nuts for coconuts and coconut M&Ms sounds like a good combonation to me.

Is the filling chocolate with coconut flavor, or white pasty stuff or what?

Flavored milk chocolate.

Oh no, I can’t condone that. Coconut surrounded by dark chocolate surrounded by candy coating is the only way I could get behind that idea.

I’m glad you clued me in. Love coconut and chocolate but sounds like I won’t bother with this one.

Hey guys, BEST combo I ever tasted was when Ben & Jerry made coconut ice cream that had chocolate chunks and almonds (forget what they called it). OMG!!! It was sooooooooooo good. Of course, it’s a “retired” flavor now. Damn. They did bring it back for a little while once, but not now.

I remember that! That stuff was scrumptuous. Apparently it was called simply Coconut Almond.

We knew about them because they’ve been showing up in an image of all the kinds in some commercials.

Finally saw them in the store. Not good. Tasted like a chemical additive not like coconut may have actually been involved.

If you’re disappointed in the coconut M&M’s, I’d give the Almond Joy variety a try. I’m not sure what they’re called exactly, but they come in a zip pouch and they’re really good. You can even taste the little bits of coconut if you’re patient enough to let them melt in your mouth.

I just discovered these existed while googling the M&Ms. They’re called Almond Joy Pieces. I’ll keep an eye out for them!

I’ve been looking for them because the coconut creme kisses were wonderful so I thought I’d give the M&M’s a try but I am disappointed to hear there is no actual coconut in them.

Can’t find the coconut creme kisses anymore either. :frowning:

Yes! That’s it. They also come in York and Reese’s flavored. I tried the York and was underwhelmed, I liked Almond Joy a lot more. Give them a try!

I rather thought a large part of the point to coconut was the texture of the little bits.

No doubt there is some technical problem in cramming all the necessarily non-homogenous coconutty chocolate in a tiny M&M, but still - if you can’t solve that, try Grand Marnier or some other flavour.

BaskinRobins do a terrific coconut icecream (with the little bits all suitably in). Goes wonderfully with Mango Tango.

Moundsaholic here to say Hey, try 'em. I agree they aren’t as good as real coconut would be, but they’re good enough for me to stockpile a couple of packs before they’re retired. And a lot less Sat.Fat than real coconut would have.

In my day, all you could buy were plain and peanut M&Ms. None of these sissy flavors like dark chocolate, mint, peanut butter, and the like. Now, even the plain M&Ms have been sissified, with their name changed to milk chocolate M&Ms. Also, there weren’t as many colors. You wanted a red M&M or a blue M&M? Tough shit.

Red isn’t new. You must be a young whippersnapper who grew up during the Red Dye #2 scare. :stuck_out_tongue:

We had almond M&Ms back in the 60s, too.

I’ve shied away from any candies with coconut until recently, when my wife gets pissed off when my histamines react to anything. Upside: I ate my first coconut candy in ages because I’m sensitive to sulfiting agents, what keep coconut white, but Benadryl cast aside such an offense as a soiled glove and my wife is vocally offended when I react to any allergens around the home so I keep myself well doped.

Tomorrow do I try an Almond Joy or a Mounds to find what I’ve missed for 30 years? The ads left it as an “either/or,” not a “both, thank you.”

do those Almond Joy bits have almonds in them? If so, is there a Mounds version, for those of us who don’t like Almonds?

Yes, there are little chunks of almond in the Almond Joy Pieces. I don’t think they’ve made a Mounds version.
