Cold November Pain (Monthly Mini-Rants)

I call those people Traffic Weasels. A Weasel is someone who will tie up traffic in an attempt to cut ahead. It’s okay to cut over and merge safely if there is a wide gap but if you force your way in to the expense of everyone around you (up to and including everyone’s safety) you are a Weasel.

Had a bit of a health scare today. I am visiting my parents for the Thanksgiving weekend, and I was working in the field with them this morning. Normally nothing special to write about. Unfortunately, I was standing too close to the tractor that my dad was operating, and the arrangement of trees around us didn’t allow for optimal airflow, so I felt a wave of nausea and dizziness come over me at one point.

I tried to move away, but about 10 seconds after the initial wave, I felt all the energy sapped from my body, my vision became heavily blurred, and I completely collapsed on the ground. Fortunately, since my parents were nearby, they were able to turn the tractor off and attend to me, and I revived not long after, although still feeling extremely dizzy and light-headed, and I needed their assistance to walk back to the house.

I suspected it was a case of carbon monoxide poisoning, and when I checked the symptoms online, it matched my experience very closely. From now on, I will always treat possibilities of carbon monoxide build-up very seriously. If it wasn’t for my parents being so close by, I could easily have died today. And now I will have to monitor my lung and heart health continuously to make sure there is no long-term damage.

I moved into a new house on Saturday, and it has a lovely porch that faces a wood. Very cozy.

Today I got home to find the entire wood clearcut. It’s like a totally different house, it feels so exposed. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but my guess is that they’re going to start building new construction, just to really hammer home that I made a bad decision and will never have peace, haha. :upside_down_face:

Wow! That ain’t no “mini” rant! Glad everything turned out OK!

Many years ago, in a previous house, the ex-wife happened to mention to me that she was seeing soot-like deposits near some of the upstairs heating vents. My son and her two daughters were living with her at the time. Idiot that I am, the serious implications of this just didn’t register. She called a furnace guy who took one look, rushed downstairs and immediately turned off the furnace. The heat exchanger had corroded and the gas exhaust fumes were coming into the house. It was a very dangerous situation.

Not only do I now know better, but I have combination smoke and CO detectors all over the house, including a spare CO detector in the basement.

Nice one, Instacart. I’ve been using your service for two years, you’ve happily brought me grocery orders in the $70+ range, but just try to order an $18 computer keyboard from Staples. Hello, cancelled order, locked account, request for identity verification. I’ve sent what you asked for, my account had damn well better be sorted ASAP.

DoorDash was quite happy to take a comparable order from Office Max and my order’s nearly here already. I would have preferred Staples, but with DH freaking out about a malfunctioning keyboard, speed is a priority here.

As for CO, we once had a cat suddenly start refusing to enter the bedroom. Turned out the heater in there was having a CO issue.

Thanks for the sentiment. Not sure if I’m out of the woods yet, as I’ve been feeling a bit of tenseness in the left side of my heart today, and I don’t know if it’s something that will go away over time. I’ve made an appointment with my primary care provider to discuss it in more depth.

Also, good on you for taking the warnings of the furnace guy and your ex-wife seriously. It’s no joke, with CO exposure a person can go from perfectly fine, to stumbling around, to completely unconscious, in a span of just 20 seconds.

Wow. That’s sad. The house I sold when I moved in with my gf head beautiful woods behind it.

A guy stopped one day saying he was going to harvest the trees if he could get everyone on board. He’d spoken with all my neighbors and they had all signed. I gave a “no way now leave” reply. I wouldn’t even look at his numbers. My neighbors were pissed off big-time.

I hear ya. We are on two acres in the trees in the Colorado mountains. We have a part time neighbor about a 1/4 mile down the road.

BUT someone bought the lot across the road from us. They had to get a variance into setbacks to build on it, it’s that shitty of a lot. We get 20-30 feet of snow a year. These folks are from Florida and I think are in for a BIG surprise. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

We’ve been here for 30 years full time. First and only house I have bought.
