Cold Pillows and Car Seats

A post by someone in the blanket thread reminded me of this.

I hate warm pillows. For some reason I am incapable of being comfy and sleeping properly in bed if my pillows are too warm. For this reason I have 4 pillows. 2 on my bed and 2 underneath. I basically go through a process of turning the pillows over once they get too warm and cycle through them until I fall asleep.

Likewise I also dislike warm seats, especially those of the car variety. I positively hate it when someone ‘kindly’ keeps a seat warm for me. No! I want it cold, and I want to warm it up with my own warmth. For some reason, putting a part of my anatomy (normally head or backside) on warm material just makes me feel ick. If I think about it, I’m sort of repulsed by the thought that someone used their behind to warm something up which I am now sitting on.

But back to the cold pillows. Most people I know whom I have had the pleasure of discussion such matters with find this pretty odd. Interestingly it’s only the pillow that I want cold. The rest of the bed should be warm. Similarly in a car, the air should be warm, but the seats cold.

I’m pretty sure I’m not alone here.

I flip my four pillows regularly until I fall asleep. But I would love to afford a car with seat warmers…it would reduce the amount of time I have to shiver waiting until the heater warms up. It can be quite painful, actually.

Try a water pillow.

Okay, you just made that up.

I love my pillow to be cold too. I flip it a lot during the night, particularly on restless nights, and especially in the hotter months. I just have one though, not a whole pillow menagerie.

I used to think it was just me too, but I remember an ESPN announcer a while back - Stuart Scott I believe - who would always say make analogies to “the cool side of the pillow.”

Me too, and I can remember doing this since I was a little kid…

I also did not know that anyone else did the same thing, so I guess its nice to know its not just me.

I get a creepy feeling sometimes when I sit on a seat that someone has just vacated and is still noticeably warm. (I’d really be creeped out if I found my bed pillow that way!) However, I must admit that I wouldn’t mind having an electric seat warmer in the car. I bought a shorter jacket recently (my old one is a parka, and covered my backside well) and noticed that my seat is sometimes a bit chilly on a Minnesota winter morning. Of course, if it’s really cold, I’ll probably just wear my old coat.

I flip my pillow in the summer sometimes, but not so much in the winter. I think it stays pretty cool on its own this time of year.

I’m like this with sheets. Must be cool on entry! (it’s fine when they warm up with my body heat later though)

This occasionally used to cause friction with my Grandma, the Electric Blanket Queen.

Her: Shall I turn on the electric blanket - make your bed nice and warm?

Me: No thanks, I’m fine

(10 minutes later)

Her: I’ll just go and turn on the blanket for you shall I?

Me: No, please don’t

(1 hour later - I go to bed and find the blanket’s been on MAX for I-don’t-know-how-long)

Me: Aaaargh! (rips sheets off, twiddles thumbs for half an hour till the bed is cool enough to get into)

I nearly posted the above in the recent Electric Blanket lovers thread, but decidd that would be a bit threadshitty. Anyway - electric blanket lovers - never assume that the whole world shares your love of a toasty warm bed!

Well, having electric seat warmers in our car, I can say they’re brilliant. I don’t mind a warm seat, only when it’s warmed by someone else. Perhaps subconsciously I believe everybody is uncontrollably flatulent.

I never knew they did water pillows! Yes. That’s going on the shopping list I think.

I used to like cold pillows, but lately have noticed I prefer them warm. I used to move them all the time, but now it seems as if I will stay in a position longer just to keep the “warm” feeling. I have heated seats in my car, but almost never use them. My coat is long enough to keep me warm enough,

The only thing worse than a cold toilet seat is a warm one.

The only thing worse than a warm one is a wet one.

I’m sorry, but these are sentences that should never appear together in any post.

Wash your mind out with soap!

And the only thing worse than a wet toilet seat is a . . .

(I’m not going there.)
