First, I realize it’s always been that way for the lower tier schools. But I can’t think of another sport where half of the teams competing know that before the season even starts, there is absolutely 0% chance of them winning a championship.
Would be nice if they could splinter off into another division, but I know money gets in the way of that.
South Carolina plays(ed) NC State, Louisiana Tech, Wofford and Clemson as their out-of-conference opponents this year. Of those, only the Wofford game was a patsy.
Many SEC schools have a historical pattern of playing an in-state patsy the game before their Big Game of the Year[sup]®[/sup]. As long as the SEC continues to play only 8 conference games, that’s not going to change. The Pac-12 and the BiG play 9 conference games, and I’ve noticed that they seem to play fewer complete push-overs any more as a result. Noticeably, the BiG isn’t playing as many games against bottom-feeder MAC teams, not to mention Div-I FCS teams.
I couldn’t really grasp why UCLA would fire their coach with one game left in the regular season, especially since a win there gets them Bowl Eligible, but then it hit me.
They don’t want to miss out on hiring Chip Kelly who seems to be moments away from being named the next coach at Florida.
Same thing seemed to happen a couple years ago when South Carolina was rumored to be in talks with Kirby Smart. UGA fired Richt (who had just won four in a row to finish another 9 win season) because they couldn’t miss out on the chance to bring in the coach they really wanted. Granted 9 wins may not be good enough at UGA anyway but how do you fire a winning coach except to get someone you like better?
Also because of the new early signing period in December. They don’t want to lose recruits. I would still go with Fisch, a brilliant young offensive mind, and bring in a veteran defensive coordinator. We just spent 100 mil to upgrade our football and basketball facilities. We should build for the long-term future.
I went to a casino outside of Memphis this weekend. About 1:30 pm CST, there was a 7 guys sitting at an empty blackjack table intently watching Bama blowing out Mercer. It was about 45-0 at the time.
Miami loses and yet it probably doesn’t hurt them. A win against Clemson and they’re pretty much in. Unfortunately, Miami’s probably not good enough to beat Clemson.
Here’s how it’s gonna play out:
-Clemson will lose to South Carolina then beat Miami giving the ACC a 2 loss champion
-Auburn beats Bama then beats UGA giving the SEC a two loss champion (and a 1 loss non-champion in Bama)
-Ohio State beats Michigan and then Wisconsin giving the B1G a 2 loss champion (and a 1 loss non-champion)
-Oklahoma loses to TCU giving the Big 12 a 2 loss champion
-PAC 12 already has a guaranteed 2+ loss champion.
