Seriously? Oregon State is favored by 3 at this point, and more importantly, we are playing away. I think we can beat them, but the Away Curse is strong this year…
Well, just joining, but to the OP: My point-a-minute Duckies look pretty damn awesome, BCS computers be damned!! Hoping to keep it going against USC this weekend.
@USCDiver: I always assumed it was for U of Southern Cal until reading this thread. Now I regret all those votes to lynch you.
Looks like I’ll soon be changing my Location to “Home 2010 Big Ten FB Champs”. MSU has got to get it up for Iowa and find a way to win, then sweep up a couple of cupcakes in Minnesota and Purdue and wrap it all up with a first-ever win at Happy Valley. My one fear is that Paterno will announce his retirement, making the MSU game his last ever home game and fire up the team.
As far as the title game goes, I’m realistic enough to know the planets must align perfectly. A 1 loss SEC champ has a political edge over a 12-0 Big 10 team, so I’m hoping for Oregon to lose, LSU to beat Alabama and Alabama to beat Auburn, and have Auburn lose the SEC title game.
I believe the Strength of Schedule (SOS) factor of the computer rankings is a cumulative. As Michigan State plays (and wins obviously) the rest of their schedule, the computers will be giving them more respect.
Boise has only played 6 games, so the additional games will help them, but they are all relatively weak. Nevada losing was not a help to their cause.
The cumulative aspect of the SOS is another reason why conference want a conference championship game. The extra game is huge for SOS.
If Missouri runs the table (winning at Nebraska and winning at Texas Tech) and then they beat a one loss Oklahoma again, the computers might ranked them #1.
As Gangster Octopus pointed out, TCU will get a boost if they can beat Utah.
The pollsters are not going to rate a 12-0 BSU or TCU above a 12-0 MSU. When your biggest win on the schedule is against a team that lost to James Madison, strength of schedule is going to kill you. Plus I don’t expect them to run the table anyway.
That team that lost to JMU is in position to win the ACC Conference. The computers do not factor “perceived” weakness in the ACC, only actual weakness. IF Va Tech goes on to win the ACC, and beating FSU in the Conference Championship, it will be a big boost to Boise St.
Boise State has a much tougher remaining schedule than Michigan State. They play Hawaii, Nevada, and Fresno State. Hawaii and Nevada are ranked 26 and 27 this week and will probably be in the top 25 next week. Iowa is only ranked 18, and Purdue and Minnesota are terrible. Penn State was the single most overrated team in the country this year. They struggled to beat Minnesota last week and MN is the worst team of any major conference save New Mexico.
As a Big Ten guy, I too find it hard to believe that an undefeated team would be ranked below Boise State, but the computers don’t take reputation into account. The voters have also decided that BSU needs to be given a shot, and this is the year for it.
