College Football November and early December 2009

I misread the computer rankings, Cincy is ahead of UT in three of the computer polls.

There is a lot online chatter on Notre Dame boards that Weis has indeed resigned or been fired.

Wow- that would be news, indeed. I don’t believe it, however.

About USC:

Hey now, the University of Washington is not a nobody. They are in a rebuilding phase, yes, but played a lot of strong games this year and have a storied history as a strong program.

USC has indeed seemingly started to fall apart this year. But before you dismiss them, remember that they had an early win against Ohio State, and convincing wins against Notre Dame, Oregon State, and Cal when two of three were ranked (and Oregon State now is.)

My apologies to the University of Washington. I was correct about them being in the top 25 after a 2nd demolishing by Stanford. What’s it going to take for Stanford to go to the Rose Bowl? Another Oregon loss?

It’s a lot more complicated than that, since Stanford lost to Arizona and Oregon State, who are also part of the log jam in 2nd place. The local paper laid out the scenario on Sat morning: step 1 was beat USC, and step 2 was for Cal to beat Arizona; both of which happened. ETA: Step 3 is for Stanford to beat Cal, and after that I think it’s: OSU beats Oregon, and USC beats Arizona.

I think there is an outside shot of a 6-way tie for the PAC-10 title at 6-3. Red games they lose, blue games they win. What a cluster f*** this would be:
Oregon 6-1 Remaining Games: Arizona, Oregon St.

Arizona 4-2 Remaining Games: Oregon, Ariz St, USC

California 4-3 Remaining Games: Stanford, Washington

Oregon St 5-2 Remaining Games: Washington St, Oregon

Stanford 6-2 Remaining Games: California

USC 4-3 Remaining Games: UCLA, Arizona

For Stanford to make the Rose Bowl they would have to win out and Oregon, Arizona, and Oregon State would all have to lose another game. Arizona and Oregon State, who are their two conference losses, would then have three conference losses each. The Cardinal would tie Oregon with two conference losses and win the tiebreaker, since they beat the Ducks head to head.

For Arizona and Oregon to go, they simply have to win out, since they play each other. Oregon State goes if they win out, since they still have to play Oregon, and Arizona loses another game.

As fun as that would be, any scenario that involves Oregon St losing to Washington St has a likelihood just barely north of zero.

Seriously, WSU isn’t winning any more football games this year, barring an Apple Cup fluke, which I deem exceedingly unlikely.

In honor of Big Game week, let me sing you a song:

So…then… it’s…
Up with the Blue and Gold,
Down with the Red;
California’s out for a victory.
We’ll drop our battle-axe on
Stanford’s head, Chop!
When we meet her, our team will surely beat her.
Down on the Stanford Farm there’ll be no sound,
When our Oski rips through the air.
Like our friend Mister Jonah,
Stanford’s team will be found
In the tummy of the Golden Bear!

Those lyrics look and sound a lot like one of Ga Tech’s fight songs. Less famous than “I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Ga Tech.”

When I’ve seen Georgia Tech play on TV I’ve heard the melody coming from their band. As the Cal website linked to says, the melody is unoriginal, but the lyrics originated at Cal.

The University of Central Florida gets its first ever win over a top-25 team, beating Houston at home. Nobody notices.

Oh well. Go Knights!

Yes, I saw the disclaimer at the bottom of your link. I never knew any background about Tech’s less famous fight song.

Have you read anything about the 1929 Rose Bowl.

As soon as I saw your post, I wondered “was that the one with Wrong Way Riegels”?

Greenpeace has been spotted in South Bend, IN trying to rescue a Beached Whale, but even they can’t help Charlie Weis at this point.

Roll Tide.

Also, LSU-Ole Miss: what the HELL was that shit? Les Miles is the worst clock manager I have ever seen. Going for a spike with 1 second left on the clock.

:smack:

That was funny, especially his answer about it after the game. Really all you could say is “yep, we fucked up”

Miles made at least 5 mistakes in the last 2 minutes.

  1. Opting for a fade on a 2-point conversion. Out of 10 plays you can run down there, the fade has to be #11 on the list. Especially with a young QB that doesn’t have the perfect touch you need for that play. Especially after the penalty and you are that much closer to the goal. There are SO MANY plays you can run. Not the same fade route again!

  2. From 1st and 10 on the Miss 30, you are already in FG range. You’ve got one of the best legs in the NCAA. Why not run a couple of runs? Or at least a quick slant? Anything but a drop back 8 yards and get sacked. One of the biggest knocks on Jefferson is that he takes WAY too many sacks. Don’t put him in that position.

  3. After the sack, you need at least 10 yards for the FG to be viable. You don’t call a swing pass that starts off 6 yards behind the line of scrimmage!

Ok, sure, #s 2 and 3 you have to blame the players somewhat. Jefferson HAS to learn how to get rid of the ball. They did not execute. However, the coaching staff did not put them in a position to gain yards, but to lose them.

  1. Waiting until the clock rolled down to :09 to call your last time out. The 3rd down play ended with over :20 on the closk. Surely you know that if the 4th down miracle pay works (which it did!) you have to leave yourself enough time to get set for the next play. In what universe can you get a 30-yard play in the middle of the field AND a FG all in 9 seconds?

  2. And of course, the spike with :01. You HAVE to get your FG team on the field. You can snap the ball to start the play but there won’t be time for a second play. If you can’t get your FG team on the field, then the QB has to take the snap and run a play! If Jefferson takes off running wide for the corner, who’s to say whether he makes it or not? Certainly a better chance than trying to get 2 plays off in :01!

I’m a huge LSU fan and I have to say this will go down in history as one of the worst 2 minutes of end game coaching in the history of the SEC.

I still think that one of the major reasons LSU lost to Bama was because Les Miles wasted all three timeouts in the third quarter, and had no way to manipulate the clock. TERRIBLE management.
