? Your Twitter friend is an idiot. Winston getting charged is not going to result in FSU plunging down in the polls. Is there any precedent for that? What if Winston had gotten hurt today? Like season-ending hurt? Would we be #4 tomorrow?
If we beat Duke (which I think we can do with or without Winston), we’re playing in The Game. We don’t, we won’t. I know people love to spin scenarios, but this one really is that simple.
If OSU loses to MSU, then we’ll be playing Auburn if they beat Mizz/SC or… well, then it starts to get fuzzy. I suppose 'Bama might be that mix or even Clemson! Holy crap, an all-ACC Nat’l Championship game would cause SEC heads to explode in a manner that would rival the Tunguska Blast of 1908.
That’s the common “wisdom” and I’ve never bought it. A very good punter can change field position by 70 or more yards during a game. That is what a good running back will produce.
An NFL team doesn’t want to “waste” a draft pick on a punter or kicker. Yet, the kicker is typically the highest scorer on the team.
Michigan State’s defense is one of the best in the country. But they also have a punter that consistently pins the other team back behind their 5 or 10 yard line. Field position can become a huge factor in a game. Pin the other team back and when you get the ball back it is at midfield, not deep in your own territory. That highly increased the likelihood of getting into scoring position.
This evening we also saw what the Auburn punter could do. (It wasn’t his fault that Auburn blew coverage when 'Bama was on their own one yard line.) Also, Auburn would be licking their wounds if 'Bama had a better kicker.
I have always felt that punters and kickers are horribly underestimated and unappreciated. But, that’s just me talking.
Just kidding dude. I tend to agree with you, but after the 1990’s, I doubt you’ll find any FSU fan that underestimates the importance of field goal kicking.*
I actually know Gerry Thomas (Wide Right I) and I bleed for him every year when we play The U and he has to hear about it - again (and again and again…).
I agree, and so does Auburn. I’m an alum, and Auburn always, and I mean always, has a good kicker and a good punter. We actively recruit for that. I don’t understand why more teams don’t.
The X’s and O’s of offense and defense important, but never ever neglect your special teams. If the game is close, you’re going to need 'em.
Cade Foster was 11 of 12 on the year when he woke up yesterday, and is a genuine NFL prospect as a placekicker. Matt Wogan was the #2 rated kicking prospect in the country.
