Col. Bruce Hampton collapses at end of birthday show at Fox Theatre
Hampton toured mainly in the southeast, and I’ve seen him perform about a dozen times. He fronted several bands of highly talented musicians such as Aquarium Rescue Unit, Code Talkers, and a few others. I once saw him performing in downtown Atlanta, and his opening act was Derek Trucks, who was 16 at the time. I also saw him in Columbus SC during St Patrick’s Day weekend, and several times in Raleigh. His music style is apocalyptic jam band, for lack of a better term. There always seemed to be some kind of poetic fatal vision to his songs, but not enough to stop celebrating life.
At least he died doing what he loved. Thanks Colonel Hampton for bringing joy to my life. I’m going to binge listen to all your music when I get home.
