About a week ago Comcast updated the software on my DVR and it seems to have changed how the fast forward and rewind work. Basically when you fast forward and then hit play it actually backs up a few seconds and starts playing. This seemed like a great idea because often you miss the mark or perhaps have slow reflexes so it will back up to the point where you really wanted it to start. But what I am finding is I guess my skill at fast forwarding was pretty good because I usually end up hitting my mark but now having to watch the last 5 seconds of a commercial. I guess I have to retrain myself to do it “wrong” which seems stupid.
Also it looks like it is doing the reverse fro rewinds. When you hit play it will actually go forward a few seconds so if you are trying to rewind to hear a lien again or something it can get tricky because you basically have to overshoot what you are looking for by several second.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions, I guess.
Oh I have, it’s just super annoying. Combined with the severe tiling issues that weren’t corrected on 4 visits, we’re downgrading to basic (which is cheaper than having just internet alone) cable and no DVR. No sense in paying for what doesn’t work. Might as well use Hulu and season subscriptions on Itunes for the rest.
Tivo’s always had that. The faster you fast forward or rewind (there are 3 speeds), the more it compensates. It’s not so that you have to watch a commercial. Once you get used to using it, it’s much easier.
This is what I was going to say. I don’t use my TiVo much anymore, but when I do, I FF on the fastest speed. As soon as I see my program again I click back to normal, which brings me right to the point where the last commercial is fading to black.
I love this new feature. I now just have to fast forward, and the instant I see my program start-up, hit play, and it’ll back up and pretty much play exactly where I want it to. Before I used to fast forward, hit play, rewind three seconds, and hit play again. I really don’t understand why people would not like this feature. I watch far fewer bits of commercials this way than before. Before, I would have to anticipate where I thought the end of the commercial break was going to be and, more often than not, I would get it off by one or two commercials. So I’d fast forward, hit play, only to hit fast forward again, hit play, and then fast forward again, before getting it right. Or, as I said, I’d fast forward until I saw the show start, rewind, and hit play again. Now, I just hit fast forward, then play, and all is well.
