Come on down, davidmich

Nope, not bending over backwards at all. I have nothing against him and don’t see why anyone would find him jerkish. And he does participate in his own threads (and even if he didn’t, I don’t care).

What I’m saying is that his posting style bears very little relation to the way an actual discussion goes for most people. That’s not jerkish, just weird. Which seems to be much what you’re saying as well.

I saw a post of his in someone else’s thread recently so perhaps these 2 pittings are making an impact. And really, what more could you ask for in life than to make an impact?

Except for the Pit thread, I wouldn’t know these people even existed or posted here. The fact that they ask the same question, years later, is disturbing. It’s strange behavior.

I think you were more critical than that. But yes, his posting style is odd. Maybe it’s a language problem, maybe he’s mildly autistic. But I don’t think it’s something to be Pitted for.

I would be a bit surprised if davidmich even knew the Pit existed, let alone that he was the subject of discussion.

Well, I was really going for more of a “vibe” kind of thing. I find the concept of such at play here on the SDMB to be somewhat ironic.

ETA: Now that I think about it, your last sentence is a bit telling, is it not? Who (or what) that has been here for a length of time would be unaware of the Pit?

Taking it from another angle, this board could use more members, members that are capable of pursuing the board’s twin missions.[sup]1[/sup] Most denizens of the internet aren’t really capable of that. But davidmich easily meets that low bar.

GQ currently operates at about 40% of capacity. I wouldn’t mind seeing a couple more posters like davidmich. Not an avalanche, just a couple more.

[sup]1[/sup] i.e. fighting ignorance and making wisecracks, preferably good humored ones.

“Telling” of what? davidmich never ventures outside of GQ. I don’t believe he’s ever started a thread in another forum (except that when he first arrived he posted all his threads in ATMB until we made him stop). His threads in other forums I think were all moved there from GQ.

davidmich is interested in this site as an informational resource. He’s not interested in the social side of the board. And there’s nothing wrong with that. That’s basically why the board exists in the first place. It was originally set up to address comments on Cecil’s columns, and as a resource to answer questions. All the other forums, and the social interaction, were set up later.

Many people use this site as a social hangout. And there’s nothing wrong with that. There’s probably a lot of posters who hardly post anywhere other than MPSIMS and IMHO. They don’t provide any information or even ask questions in GQ. Should they be faulted for that? After all, they’re not really “contributing to the board” anything but their personal opinions and chitchat, purely for their personal enjoyment. In what way are they superior to davidmich?

As a GQ mod, I really can’t fault a poster who uses the board for the purpose it exists in the first place.

I took your phrase “I would be a bit surprised if davidmich even knew the Pit existed” too literally. I apologize.

Haven’t you (the collective you, meaning the moderators) previously told people that you’re sick of them constantly opening threads in the wrong forum (e.g., repeatedly opening IMHO threads in GQ)? I’ve seen you (again, the collective you) close threads immediately because the person refuses to learn which forums in which to start threads.

So why are you apparently cool with the fact that davidmich hasn’t learned in which forums to open his threads?

When he was opening all his threads in ATMB, we started closing them until he learned to put them in GQ. He eventually did.

Actually, 95% of his threads actually belong in GQ and stay there. (I just checked and only 5 of his last 100 threads were moved. Some of these were judgement calls on moves to GD and IMHO.) Most of the others that were moved were on literature and got moved to Cafe Society.

While it would be better if he were to learn which forum to post these in, they aren’t frequent enough that I have felt compelled to take action as yet. He is far from the worst offender on such things. Many other long term posters who should know better post things in GQ that obviously belong elsewhere. I’ve only ever taken action against a handful of posters who were really persistent about it.

It’s posts like this that make me wish the SDMB had one of them fancy “like” buttons.

Where did Quartz go? Has he decided to stop contributing to his own thread? Is he occupied with giving back to the board by sharing his wisdom in other threads? Is he busy keeping this community healthy and clean by reporting posts, as is the duty of a proper board member? Come on down, Quartz - enlighten us!

Worst Pit thread ever

Your comment is pretty revealing of how long you have been on this board :D. This one is a fail IMHO, but we’ve had plenty worse.

And no, I’m not going to make a list ;).

The time you were Pitted would be one.

It is so much of the confused. Who is one who can learn of its existence?

He’s back, and casually asking about micro credit lending during the Song dynasty in China.

Y’know, he was probably just thinking about it while in the tub one day, and decided to ask us for our opinion.

…Or we’re doing a essay mill’s homework for them.

Yes, the breadth and volume of the questions led me to assume that the questions are coming from elsewhere, not his own personal curiosity. Whatever. Worse things have happened. We have many apparently genuine members whose posts are far more tedious (one of whom started this thread).

If IQ was expressed in latitude, you’d be tropical. I doubt you get that, but it’s just as well, a brain would be a waste on you.

So he’s not an essay mill posing as a poster? Thanks for the ad hominem
