Come on down, davidmich

That was 2008 and nothing has changed. Your response in the (2nd) Do Re Me thread had me in stitches for hours. The perfect dead pan reply. And note that the fucker never even apologized. Well, whatever. It’s just a message board and we’re all a bunch of anonymous posters anyway. Right?

KarlGauss’s old Pit thread of Jinx sounds eerily like this one (and the previous Davidmich one).

I’ll admit that DM’s threads used to piss me off. It’s called Google. Use it. But since the last Pitting I do think he’s gotten better about the caliber of the questions he’s asking. I haven’t felt that sense of condescension that came across when he took the time to enter a GQ query that clearly could have been answered if he copied and pasted it into Google. Before his reform, you just felt like a nameless cog in the great soul-sucking vastness of the internet. A tool.

Stop using me! sobs

But, I think he has reformed. To an extent. Now I amuse myself by trying to find the common thread between his questions. Proper verb tenses in French. The fate of a monarchy. Or something. Look I don’t always read them all. The point is, what does it all mean?

I’m thinking author, possibly gunpowder fantasy or parallel history. Second choice, grad student. I don’t think grad student covers it though. Unless he’s studying the behavior of self-proclaimed wits on a message board.

I sympathize with the pitting, but still welcome Davidmich to visit and ask questions. Within reason.

davidmich and davidm are two different posters.

Aside from that, I agree, I think this pitting is weak. davidmich is no Jinx.

Not that I am aware.

Not in the least. There are no doubt hundreds of posters who have been here much longer and have many more posts who have never once done either.

Utterly normal behavior. The vast majority of posters never PM a mod or report a post.

Checking my PMs, I have been PM’d by fewer than 50 non-mod posters in the past year. Most of them want to know why someone was banned, or request a name change, or are protesting a note or warning. I’m not sure why you think PM’ing a mod is an indication of making a contribution to the board. Most of them are just made in the posters own self-interest.

What the fuck is a Gender Turning Test? You dumb!

Idle Thoughts ran one just this April 1st.

Actually, he has a thread about Shakespeare in Café Society. I was posting in it a few days ago. Very weird experience. You’re right about it not being an actual conversation between him and anyone else. At a casual glance it could look like a discussion, but when you look twice, it really isn’t. He almost never responds to anyone’s point, and when he does, it’s with something that isn’t actually any kind of response - it’s like he picked a term at random from the other person’s post without reading it, plugged the term into a search engine and then posted the first result. Apart from that, he just keeps repeating that he thinks A because we’ll never know but it feels like that’s probably the answer.

The rest of the thread was interesting, though, so I don’t have anything against the guy.

While I understand, and agree with, your point. . . that is hardly a resounding endorsement!

He posted the question in GQ and it was subsequently moved.

But I have no problem with his questions or lack of contribution to other threads. He adds to the board in his own way. I don’t find many of his questions too interesting, but that’s true of most questions. I probably read 5-10% of threads, so if I like 1 in 10 of his posts, he’s pretty much average.

I find this rather odd, since he responded directly to you, and his comment was relevant to what you said. Perhaps you misunderstood it.

He also responded directly to several other people in that thread. It can be missed because he apparently hasn’t figured out how to use the quote function.

See, I don’t agree. This is exactly what I mean: at first glance that did look like a response, and it was in fact related to my post. But it didn’t actually respond to what I was saying, or move the discussion on in any way, or support any point that davidmich or anyone else had been making, or refute any point that I or anyone else had been making.

I think you are bending over backwards to try to find problems with his responses. His response to Fretful Porpentine was directly on point. His response to you was as well. You remark on things that were not part of the Jewish stereotype, and davidmich agrees that Shylock was not the stereotypical Jew. I really fail to see how his response was in some way not a comment on your post.

davidmich admittedly has a somewhat silted and somewhat odd way of expressing himself. It appears that English is perhaps not his first language. He doesn’t know how to use the quote function. But the accusation that he doesn’t “really” participate in his own threads is ridiculous.

Since when does truth matter in the Pit?

Says the troll.

OP pits someone but is not even gonna bother with linking to some of the guy’s threads that illustrate his point? You’re going to make me do a search? How rude. Also exactly the kind of thing a bot would do.

These posts read like those guys at school who looked for any reason to pick on the kid who was a little different. Nevermind that he was perfectly harmless or would help you with your homework. Or distract the teacher so that the test gets delayed.

The main criticisms of davidmich seem to be:

  • He asks a lot of questions in GQ.

  • He asks questions on a wide variety of topics. People can’t figure out what the connection between them is. Maybe he just has a wide range of interests.:eek:

  • He expresses himself in a somewhat awkward manner. Maybe English isn’t his first language. Maybe he’s not very good at conversation.:eek::eek:

  • He doesn’t participate in the more social aspects of the board. He doesn’t post in other people’s threads.:eek::eek::eek:

Pretty damning behavior there. Good reasons for a Pitting.:dubious:

He posts a LOT of threads in GQ. He NEVER (AFAIAA) posts outside his threads. His responses in his threads are often general, and only once or twice. I’ve not spotted him engage in an actual conversation in any of his threads. It’s like he’s not actually interested in the answers. All of which seems to me to sum up to being jerkish. Assuming he’s a he and not a bot.

You have a very odd definition of “jerkish”. It borders on “does things differently than I do.”

That’s what it’s there for. Considering this an offense is idiotic.

So what?

This is total bullshit. I’ve just looked at the last dozen threads he started. He responded multiple times in most of them, and his responses were usually on point. Contrary to what has been said, he does respond to other posters.

It seems like you haven’t actually read many of his threads.

Considering such trivial “offenses” to be jerkish (even if true) is an absurd overreaction. On the other hand, I think it’s pretty jerkish to Pit someone over such nonsense. Yeah, you do respond to questions and report posts, but it’s not like you’re such a major contributor to the board that you can look down your nose at other posters.

I do think this is like schoolyard dynamics in middle school where the odd nerdy kid who talks funny and doesn’t fit in or play games with the other kids is singled out for mockery. And I think the SDMB should be a haven for such kids, not give them shit.
