Come on in! Who the F#@k are you?!

Obviously I am in the minority when it comes to manners. Fine, I can accept that.

I should have pointed that out in my OP. I apologize for any confusion I may have caused.

I will say two things, and then I will move along. I know when I am outnumbered and can take a hint.

First, I downloaded the software for IRC today for the first time ever. I had some trouble getting everything working properly * in addition to having a full time job to attend to*.I apologize if my computer skills and multi tasking abilities are not on par with the rest of the IRC community.

Second point: Most of the threads in the section have nothing to do with the SDMB. The last one I saw had to do with Oprah or something. The fact that this rant has nothing to do with the boards should either be irrelevant, or set a precedent for other posts in The Pit.

You poor tortured soul! [cues violin]

damnit boy, I ain’t got time for this shit. There’s men and women in chat right now begging for just a little bit of the Enderlovin and I’m here responding to your pathetic-downloading-IRC-skankass.

You have two options.

  1. Grab a shovel and a sharp knife. Go to a fresh grave and dig up the corpse. Use the knife to cut open the dead guy’s back, remove the backbone, and use it as your very own. Because anyone who has to bitch about being asked for his ID at the door and runs pissed in his pants scared to mommy while screaming all the way about how tough he is sure as hell needs a backbone.

  2. You forget this whole incident even existed. I already have. You come in chat and I promise not to stick anything sharp and pointy of mine near any orifice of yours…for at least a week.

Think of puppy dogs and ice cream man.

It’s a slightly different issue.

The BBQ Pit is generally open to any topic. One of the few restrictions happens to be in regards to the chat. Since there is a broad overlap of people who post on both media, the administration has asked that, in the interest of not creating flame wars of firestorm proportions, conflicts in one arena be kept there.

The same understanding is held toward the half-dozen or so message boards and newsgroups where multiple Straight Dope members hang out. It is not an attempt to limit discussion, per se, so much as a desire to not wake up some morning to a flame war that is engulphing five message boards, three newsgroups, and three chats with cross-posting flooding the bandwidth and no hope of suppressing the flames. (Numbers were picked at random and are not reflective of actual numbers).

Give the fucking guy a break…god damn. From reading some of the replies you’d think this dude slapped your momma and fucked your dog or something.

Who the fuck am I and what am I doing here? Who knows.

There’s nothing wrong with having problems connecting or getting things to work, but try to keep in mind that the people on the other side of your monitor don’t know this. They may have been all nice and friendly while you were having problems, but on their side they only saw someone who wasn’t being friendly in return. At some point, a person got fed up and typed the line you saw. It could all be a simple misunderstanding.

Actually, a precedent has been set (I think). There was a rant here that stemmed from #straightdope chat. It got ugly. Not your fault for not knowing that or anything - you’re new, how would you know? But most problems in the chat room can be easily settled in the chat room. I think it’s a touchy subject here because people may get confused and think the chatroom has something to do with this site or the Chicago Reader, when (and we can’t stress this enough for anyone reading) that is not the case. I may be wrong, but it’s a case of The Chicago Reader covering its ass legal-wise. Again, not that you would be expected to know that or anything, and I don’t think anyone really blames you for that. The full 411 on this would probably be best coming from a mod or admin.

And one last thing:

Stop with the generaliazing. You’ve dealt with a handful of people in this thread and we are not representatives of the board or the chat room as a whole. There’s maybe about a dozen voices here out of a few hundred posters at a given time. We’re individual assholes (no offence to all my fellow assholes out there) who have individual opinions when it comes to manners. As a general rule, this is not the forum for manners. This is the Pit where things have big nasty pointy teeth. Manners are for all the other fora.

And I’ve been to chat a few times, things can be quite fun and friendly there, I promise. Give it another chance. Go in with an open mind and try not to let this spoil the experience.

MrVisible, what the FUCK? Someone goes into a chat room and is greeted with “Who the fuck are you?” And if he doesn’t like it, he’s an asshole. That’s the craziest definition of ‘asshole’ I’ve ever heard.

I have no pre-existing problem with chat or you, but that was ridiculous.

Jesus guys, why so nasty?

Does freshmeat have a history that others may not be aware of?

If not, why the abuse?

Before this thing gets set on fire, burned, locked and possibly deleted, I’d like to quote our humble TubaDiva from another thread, if I may.

For the record, in SEVERAL threads it has been clearly stated that IRC chat talk is NOT to be put on these boards. If you have a CHAT problem, take care of it in CHAT.

It’s quite simple, really.

leave me out of this, please!

whats this chat thing? I wanna come say howdy sometime!

Wow, I think I’m gonna get on IRC right now!!!

How very fucking motivating, LOL LOL. Having interacted with so many dopers I have a hard time believing that such behavior is standard, but what the hell, even AOL chat doesn’t suprise me… Why would cocky dopers in relay chat?

I am especially amused by the defensiveness of some of you over a pit thread complaining about being treated poorly. Isn’t that standard pit fare?

But then, so is bitching back at a bithcing OP so what the hell. :: singing :: Anything goes! (no time for love, Dr jones)

Enough. As noted, we don’t like chat rants here.
