I’m consistently impressed with freshness of the show. Auckerman has a comedic aesthetic that sets it apart. Plus his chemistry with Reggie Watts is perfect. They’re like a classic comedy duo without a straight man.
The first two seasons are on Netflix if you’ve not had the pleasure.
One thing Aukerman is really into is awkward “anti-comedy”. He also loves dumb puns. I really enjoy this kind of humor but I can see why many people wouldn’t.
I’m not sure if he’s a musician who sidelined into comedy or was a comedian who sidelined into music and then ended up back largely into comedy.
When I was living in Seattle (10+ years ago) he was a pretty well-known musician with his band (I did lights for them when they played my college). I saw him appear in a sketch comedy show and it was “Look, Reggie Watts is trying comedy now!”
Just recently I found out he is from my hometown in Montana.
I listen to the podcast sometimes, but it can be painfully awkward on occasion. There’s sometimes the desperation to squeeze comedy out of something that isn’t going anywhere, and they don’t give themselves any easy outs.
Jimmy Pardo will at least abandon a bit if he thinks it’s not working. Scott Aukerman will keep it going for another hour.
Perhaps if I didn’t compare it unfavorably to the CBB podcast I’d like it more.
And of course, it’s not impossible to “get it” and still be somewhere between love and hate.
I’m curious, did you and your rabid fan pals listen to the podcast before becoming fans of the TV show? It wouldn’t surprise me if the rabid fans were less familiar with podcast than the so-so fans like me. Part of what I like about the podcast is that so much is improv, and the TV show really doesn’t seem to be improv at all. I suppose it’s derived from improv, but although that extra layer of polish adds, it also takes away.
Is the point where I get to brag on working for Earwolf and Scott for a couple of years? And before I did that I got to hang out with Aukerman and the ladies of Garfunkel and Oates one night in Chicago - that was a good time.
I’m familiar with podcast. I keep hoping Marissa Wampler, Tom Lycus, etc, make an appearance on the TV show.
What I like about the podcast is Auckerman. What I dislike about the podcast is Auckerman tends to let the guest/skit character steer things when I’d rather Auckerman handle it. The TV show is pure Auckerman.
I was a big fan of his stuff on Mr. Show, although I had no idea he was such a big part of it until I discovered the podcast.
Count me in with this trend. Love the podcast, I think I’ve listened to all of the episodes at least twice.
The show just feels different and a little too ‘forced’. I also don’t care for Reggie’s music or comedy either so having that on the show each ep drags it down for me as well. I suffer from hot tub foot, so that may be part of the problem too.
