Comedy TV Show - Schitt's Creek

Last year, a new TV sitcom called “Schitt’s Creek” had its first season. It stars Eugene Levy and his son Daniel Levy as well as Catherine Ohara, Chris Elliot and others. Levy and his son are the Exec Producers and they wrote some of the episodes as well. What a beautiful gift for a father to give to his children. Oh, his daughter, Sarah Levy also has a small part. But it is a recurring part. The best episode (IMHO) is the one where Catherine O’Hara signs on to do a TV commercial for a “fruit wine” (Episode 6). I got several laughs from that. Another good episode is the one where the family tries to arrange a surprise birthday party for the mother and are met with foul ups from Chris Elliot along the way. Very funny as well. (Episode 12).

The first time I watched the 13 episodes, I found it mildly amusing. But I watched them again yesterday and I actually had several LOL moments. I mean real good deep laughs.

I was very surprised because I almost never LOL at any TV shows anymore.

The humor is a little off-beat and may not be for everyone. But once you get to know these crazy characters, some of them are just downright hilarious.

I’m posting this thread in case any of you can find this show. I’m not sure it is broadcast on American TV. But it was renewed for a 2nd season and this time I’ll be paying a whole lot more attention to it.

It is rated 7.1 on IMDB which is above average. But I would have given it at least 8.0.

The title sounds like a bad parody from SNL, Robocop or Max Headroom, and is a lovely case of media expectations being blindsided by reality.

I think I’ve heard the great ensemble comedy shows of the 70s and 80s - Second City, SNL, Fridays and the others that came and went in a flash - referred to by participants as “skit creek.”

It was broadcast on American television; I believe on IFC.

Yes. The title is obviously a play on the expression “Up Shit’s Creek”. The story line is that this family of four created a very successful business and became multi-millionaires. But they were cheated out of all their money by a crooked business manager and were forced to move into this town that they once bought as a joke.

The name of the town is “Schitt’s Creek” and indeed the familly truly is in a lot of financial difficulty.

Eugene Levy used to be one of the primary cast members in an 80s sketch comedy show called SCTV (Second City TV) that was much like SNL. But it was produced for a tiny fraction of the budget. Here is a link:

Never heard of it. I see it’s available on Amazon Prime. I’ll take a look. Levy and O’Hara were both on SCTV. I’m sure they’ll be at least mildly amusing.

It was broadcast in the US on the Pop network, which used to be the TV Guide channel. That’s probably why it flew right under most people’s radar. I thought it was very funny, in spite of the awful title.

I first saw SCTV in August or September 1977. It was brilliant then, but went downhill slightly when Harold Ramis left a year and a half later. Then it was picked up by NBC (IIRC) for late Friday night broadcasts, where the network tried to turn it into an SNL clone with musical interludes. Just was not the same. :frowning:
