If the GOP is not willing to stand up now, they never will be.
On edit, they never will be.

Yeah, if you’re holding your breath for the 21st century GOP to do the right thing, you’re gonna have a bad time.
Prepare for FBI leaks like never before.
Even with all the other stuff Trump has done so far, this has the feel of going way too far :(. For those who remember it, was this how things felt back when Watergate was unfolding in Nixon’s day?
The difference here is that I think all are in agreement that Comey was doing a poor job as Director. In July, Republicans hated him. In October, Democrats hated him worse. Recently, no one seems to like what he’s doing, and everyone criticizes.
The trouble, of course, is that the person who will pick his successor is one of the people the successor will be investigating. Thus, this is going to look bad…
I dunno, how busy is Jared Kushner?
If McConnell and Ryan rubberstamp such a blatantly inappropriate choice, there will be mass protests on a scale not yet seen.
Efrem Zimbalist, Jr!!!
I imagine he’s feeling mildly nauseous right now.
I don’t get it?
OK, so has Trump just fucked himself over, or has he put himself beyond the reach of US laws?
Why are you going to bat for Trump? You know it doesn’t just look bad. If those actions were the reason he was being fired, then it would have happened when Trump took office. Instead, it happened when the guy is investigating Trump.
You’re a lawyer. Imagine this situation. You have a witness coming in that will testify against the defendant. The witness works for the defendant. A few days before, the guy gets fired from his job, supposedly for past performance problem in the previous year.
Would any juror believe that? No. The only person who would even think to try that angle would be a defense attorney.
Hence, you are acting like a defense attorney for Donald Trump. Why are you doing this? You aren’t his lawyer, so you aren’t required to come up with any defense, no matter how transparent.
Furthermore, in 1974, the GOP was the minority party in Congress. They put pressure on Nixon because it was better than having a President from their party impeached and convicted by the Democratic Congress.
That’s not an issue now. That pressure on Congressional Republicans doesn’t exist.
Well, it was a long time ago, but I recall by the time of the Saturday Night Massacre that Nixon’s removal from office had acquired a certain air of inevitability about it. I don’t feel that, yet, about Trump, although I am holding to my prediction of ‘out of office within 2 years’.
So, I was just googling around to see if there were any more rumors on a replacement and I stumbled on something very interesting.
Apparently, the right wing news sites have been awash in rumors of Comeys firing for the past couple of weeks. There is a general call for Trey Gowdy to replace him, a lot of petitions and the like.
So let’s see if they try to put up Gowdy. I was thinking he might actually try to put up Giuliani or Chris Christie.
But while Gowdy is generally a pretty despicable dude, he had some interesting things to say about the Trump/Russia investigation on Bill Maher. He was pretty outraged by the whole thing and he was in favor of a special prosecutor. He actually got applause from Maher’s audience
.
Wasn’t Gowdy pretty much deflecting away from the investigation during the entirety of his questioning?
But, here’s a funny thing - one of the people who absolutely loooooooooved James Comey’s flapping gums last October, was the same guy who just fired Comey, ostensibly for not keeping it zipped.
Suddenly! Right in the middle of the investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia - SUDDENLY! - (seven months later) Donald just can’t stand Comey being so unfair to Crooked Hillary, so he does the right thing and fires him? It is to laugh.
The reason that Donald Trump fired James Comey is because James Comey wouldn’t put the kibosh on the investigation into Trump’s connections with Russia. And the reason we know that’s the case is because Donald spontaneously thanks Comey for agreeing that Donald isn’t the target of the Russian investigation, which proves that that’s what was on Donald’s mind when he was penning the letter.
That’s also what Trump is talking about when he says that he wants a new FBI Director who “restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission.” Trump is blaming Comey for allowing this Russia thing to go on, rather than stamping out in the interesting of “restoring” public trust.
CNN reading a strongly worded statement by Burr ® being troubled by the move.
I’ve got to admit I wasn’t watching during his testimony. Of course, Gowdy could’ve been buzzed when he was talking to Maher.
There was a mix-up during the show with the beverages in the coffee cups. Seth McFarlane got Gowdy’s water and Gowdy got McFarlane’s booze. A little bit of hilarity ensued. I have no idea if it was real or staged.
Am I misremembering the many posts that called for Comey’s firing in 2016?
For things that happened in 2016. Seems relevant.
