Comics: Best (and worst) of 2002

What would you say was the best and worst happenings in the world of comics this year?

My top three are “The Ultimates” by marvel, a great relaunch of the Avengers characters, The Spider-Man movie, which was great and will pump up the hype and budgets of future comic-based films, and “Forge” and “Edge” from Crossgen Comics, great compendia of their titles for dirt cheap prices.

Worst, well, DK2 is up there as a disappointment, as was the Transformers mini from Dreamwave, which was so pretty, but sooo dull.

My favorite item to come out was Marvel’s GI JOE TPBs. I used to love that series and now I’ll have them all soon enough.

As far as new stuff? Probably anything in the Ultimate line-up is a-ok in my book. If my comic store sold nothing but those and ToyFare, I’d still frequent them.

And I agree, DK2 was probably the worst thing to hit the comics scene in a decade or so.

The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen–takes all prizes.

Best: The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Marvel’s Ultimates, Transformers: The War Within , and, generally, JSA

Worst: DK2 (I entered fandom with the original…this sequel was so not worthy…)

Wasn’t League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol I, in 2001? This year is Vol. 2, which isn’t done yet (but which is really good).

The comics I’ve enjoyed this past year (a year in which I bought a lot fewer comics) were Powers, The Red Star, Halo and Sprocket, Knights of the Dinner Table, LoEG2, Tom Strong (on every other solstice, when it comes out), and as usual, anything Hellboy.

Best: Vaughan & Guerra’s Y - THE LAST MAN. Fantastic book – every line and reaction is just right.

Wood & Ralston’s POUNDED. A perfect little three-issue miniseries – you both like and can’t stand every character, just like real people.

CrossGen’s compendia (Forge & Edge) – although I was wary of the new sizes, they worked out just great, and where else can you get brand new color comics for less than a buck an issue?

Worst: Takin Kesel off Harley Quinn and making her into a Punisher clone.

I can’t believe no one’s mentioned** Lone Wolf 2100** yet! Also, **30 Days of Night **is amazing.

The worst had to be the Kiss comic from Dark Horse… didn’t anyone read it before publishing it?? I got the first one and have to keep it far away from other comics for fear its terribleness will contaminate the rest of my collection.

Wow… seems like nobody liked Dark Knight 2. I guess I won’t bother making the trip to a comic shop to pick it up.

DK2 wasn’t awful, it just wasn’t top quality, not even in the top half of comics this year. Overhyped, and didn’t deliver all that DC was saying it was gonna be.

I did really like Powers this year, and I’m very excited about the movie that’s in preduction now. Should be very cool.

The 2000AD end of year special has a new story starting, a crossover between Judge Dredd and Aliens  Should be good

GI Joe----Started again in '01, but it’s had a good year.

Yup, yup, big fan of the G.I.Joe series, I keep expecting it to disappoint me, and it never does. Not many books out there have kept me coming back liek the joes, and it survived my recent cut backs in titles, as it just seems to give a grat book, every month.
