I would suggest that the “no bashing someone who’s been suspended/banned” policy should become a rule, at least in ATMB. If you just have to say something about them, take it to the Pit.

Well, hell. I missed the post about Lib’s suspension, so i didn’t even realize his absence was enforced. I assumed that he had just decided to take a bit of a break from posting, as he occasionally does.
Not sure that this was the most productive way to return, but i’m glad he’s back. Things are always more interesting around here when he’s posting.
Well, my guideline would be that it’s useless and undesirable to start a Pit thread about a poster after the poster’s banning. In particular, if a poster says something in Thread X that causes him or her to be banned, I would tell the people in Thread X “you can stop beating up on that poster since he’s been banned and can’t respond.” Especially for the “troll” type who would glory in the trouble caused in the thread.
That doesn’t mean that you can never mention the poster again in any shape, way, or form at the SDMB, or refer, in one of your posts, to some of the banned poster’s qualities or defects of characters.
The situation of suspended posters is somewhat different. Technically they are still board members. I would discourage someone starting a thread to flame a suspended poster during the suspension, or for someone to start a thread in MPSIMS asking “Hey, [suspended poster], can you come give me your opinion on this?” but not everyone will be aware of the poster’s status.
It’s got nothing to do with Liberal. The threads in ATMB are supposed to be just announcements to avoid rampant speculation. In fact, I would support each of those threads being locked as soon as they are posted. They require no comment from anyone other than the moderators and admins.

We do have a practice of not permitting people to modify others’ usernames for fun and insult.
Liberal has explicitly asked that he be addressed and referred to as Liberal in several earlier threads and at least one poster has already been warned on the basis that they refused to abide by that.
We will see no more references to Liberal as Libertarian.

The point is that it is our practice to leave usernames alone; we have issued Warnings (which you will note, I did not) to people who have violated that taboo; this particular namechange has already been addressed in previous threads.
No one here is in trouble or has been Warned. I just wanted everyone to remember the rules before things got out of hand. People find lots of ways to mock Liberal without resorting to shunned practices.
I think you have just been whooshed. I believe Hentor’s point is that sometimes people misspell his name. He doesn’t think it is any big deal, if I understand it correctly.
Also, if I remember correctly, no one is “mangling” Liberal’s name, but instead referring to him by what he called himself when he first got here. Hardly offensive.

I’m sure Martin Luther King, Jr. didn’t like being called Liver Lipped Luther but that was hung on him, too. You can’t really control namecalling. Why should Liberal get a pass on something that’s not enforced on others? I flamed Blake not too long ago, renaming him at one point That Twit Blake and no one warned me.

I for one don’t dislike Liberal nor do I wish to see him leave (this OP kind of makes me wonder though) but I do not see why a name change should be offlimits for discussion. Plus this is the pit we hurl insults we cuss we rant we whine we tease why should a username be offlimits for ridicule. Other forums ok, but why can I say someone is a scum sucking asshole goat feltching slime ball, but I can’t refer to what is in my opinion a disengenuous name change?
