We don’t grill posters about their reason for changing screen names. Actually, we don’t even ask why, much less care. Apparently you do, since you’re all-fired certain about intentions. Changing a screen name doesn’t imply the slightest obligation to “start with a clean slate”, or anything else for that matter.

Then you compound your inanity by an accusation of trollery–based on your superior personal insight about (gasp!) name changes–and threaten to flame mods any time you can’t grasp a rule with a mind-numbingly obvious reason behind it.

You’re acting like a jerk, dropzone. This is a warning. Continue in this course and you face banning.

The only circumstance that causes problems is when former screennames are used. The problem is causes for other posters, especially newer folks who aren’t savvy to name changes throughout the board’s history and probably don’t care.

You guys might want to get together on this. At least if only means what I think it does.

Actually, I am not sure that the precedent was set for Liberal. I was under the impression that there had been more than one occasion when a poster had requested a username change and, in subsequent threads, was taunted by references to his or her original name.

Actually, I was referring to allowing someone to change their screen name simply for the sake of pushing people’s buttons. All it takes is a feeble explanation and it’s completely kosher.

Ah, but the reason for the change is what’s important! Tom, you’re a good Catholic boy and, as such, you know that the motivation behind the sin is more important than the sin itself. Lib’s motivation for the change was, as Merijeek said, “simply for the sake of pushing people’s buttons.” We have a name for that here but I risk banning by merely hinting at it, just as I risk banning for threatening to Pit a mod. If people feel that way, it’s because of Liberal’s behavior. Do you think that the posters in question just drew his name out of a hat and decided to hate him en masse because of it?

I’ve never been unclear on the animosity towards Liberal. I even agree, he’s often confusing, pedantic, and tends to overreact to perceived slights. I wouldn’t want to get on his bad side.

If Liberal is indeed so explosive that he can’t handle the response to his own unpleasantness, I’d say that’s his problem.

For awhile one of his games was to make spurious allegations that I was violating board rules - was that okay? Should I smile and say, “Liberal, you make this place more interesting,” and offer up a nice big ass-kissing, when he’s got a history of attacking me?

I will say here, I honestly hadn’t noticed this behavior before. And I have picked up on this thing with others. Lib has had his stalkers before, so have many of the more vocal names here. The reason I spoke up is this: despite his flaws, Liberal has always struck me as someone who keeps things on track (if not always on topic). You mention spurious allegations, and I can believe there were allegations…but not that they were spurious. At least, not to Lib. Like the opening post here, he states he was deliberatly misquoted by TubaDiva. I disagree. I wouldn’t go further than “misrepresented”, a big difference in board rules. “Deliberate” is a matter for debate, which I feel a thread like this would have been good for. Anyway, I’m trying to say I don’t think Lib just starts stuff “because.” Your history may vary.

The problem for Liberal is that he’s got a history of attacking half the people on the board - and most of them are no more inclined than I am to let it go. If Liberal is incredibly unpleasant to interact with, I don’t see why the onus is on everyone else to walk on eggshells around him. He reaps what he sows, and Liberal has a bad habit of sowing dogshit.

And the problem I see is that this is a one-sided viewpoint. You can’t seriously point at him and claim, “he started it” for everything, can you? He’s started arguments, yes, and had arguments started with him.

And there’s no onus regarding him at all. The one onus on this board is, “don’t be a jerk.” It’s been said, over and over, if he’s that unpleasant to interact with, then don’t. Report him to a mod, if you need to. But meeting like with like has only escalated this fued to…well, to this thread. Page after page of vitriol directed at a person who’s only posted once in this topic. A warning has already been issued to one poster. It’s out of hand.

To anyone who still cares: I don’t think he needs to be handled with kid gloves, or given any special treatment. I just think he needs to not be baited. Let him go. If something he says relates to you or one of your beliefs, then answer it. Or not. Ignore him if you think his opinions really aren’t worth it, or are just that ludicrous. All this incessant snarking is doing is just showing how much baggage many of you are willing to lug around all the damn time.

Anyway, that’s my piece. Excalibre, I appreciate your response.

My guess is, Lib’s and gum’s elliptical references are to a thread started by the latter which quoted huge swaths of comments about the former on one of the anonymous snark boards. The thread got disappeared before more than a handful of people saw it.

Since one of the anon amusements is to bloviate about ways to get disliked Dopers banned, I daresay Lib read such comments and perceived yet another conspiracy to bring him down.

Actually, the mention of His4Ever brings up an interesting point. She also asked to have her name changed, in her case to Lynn73, as part of a way of making a new start, yet no one refers to her by her new name and, if someone did, I’m not sure how many people would realize who the poster was talking about. Granted she stopped posting within a year of changing her name and this did happen some time ago, but I don’t recall anyone being admonished for calling her His4Ever instead of Lynn73.
