Beyond that, yes, there are certain mistakes people can make which do betray their background. For example if someone on the internet claims they were raised an Orthodox Jew and “went to Temple every week” then something’s wrong because Orthodox Jews refer to their place of worship as “Synagogue” not “Temple”(whereas some Reform and Conservative Jews refer to their place of worship as “Temple”).
Similarly, Russians refer to their “motherland” not to their “homeland”. Had you done the research you wouldn’t have made such a foolish mistake.
