I found myself quickly rewinding and going back over a lot of it to pick up the little things. (Like when Jeff “corrects” Britta’s speech.) Lot’s of small gems there.
Oh, he had sideburns in the shape of stars. I get it now. (I remember when I had that moment.)
So both John Belushi and Chevy Chase played characters that went to college for a long time, got expelled, and complained about X years of college flushed somewhere.
How does Jeff know that Chang lived in the vents with a monkey? I thought the monkey in a vent thing was mostly a secret (at that time).
I couldn’t pick out what Vicki said when she threw the trash can. Anyone get it?
OTOH, they seem to be falling into a trite “Oh, know, they’re expelled! Now what?” path. I hope that they turn this one on it’s head. Maybe John Goodman’s character will step in and save Troy (and thus the others).
Abed looked like he knew that Faux-by (same guy from the celebrity look alike episode!) was not the real dean. I suspect they will go on a mission to restore the dean and get readmitted.
This episode wasn’t as funny as usual, although revisiting the parallel universes was good, and the Dean’s little song were terrific.
It was a hoot to watch the Dean keep calling people up to talk at Starburns’ wake, even as things kept getting worse for him and Greendale. I think Dean Pelton is a great character.
Troy’s fascination with the one-armed man was hilarious. Watching his face as he measured up his arm … higher … and higher. Abed: “It was his other arm.”
I feel kinda annoyed that I needed someone to point out to me that the episode itself mirrored the five stages of grief.
“I was going to be the first one in my family to graduate from community college. Everyone else graduated from normal college. Now they’re really going to give me a hard time.”
Interesting to see Troy give the “Winger speech” for this episode. Shirley is about to go off the wagon and Britta is about to flirt with the pizza delivery guy, and Troy’s the one gets each of them to change their mind. Jeff seemed to approve.
I like that they did a fairly subtle take on it. Other shows have done that before and they make it really obvious to the point where they even say out loud, “Now we’re in grief!” Community didn’t even say what the stages between denial and acceptance are.
Is it crazy to think they may be building up to yet another paintball season finale, with the Greendale Seven against the Changlorious Basterds? Cuz that would be awesome.
One thing I’m sad about is the biology teacher resigned. I mean, it makes sense, that school’s horrid. But I liked the fact that he was a dash of normal in an insane world.
I have a strong feeling that the Dean will be the one who rallies the group to regain the school, and finally be considered ‘a good dean’.
And we’ll get some closure with Vice Dean Goodman’s air conditioning annex because I don’t think we get more of him next season. Goodman use to have Pelton under his thumb, but with Chang taking control we’ll probably get the a-c program collapsing.
