and how they rationalize their decision.
I’m curious. I think I have a decent enough understanding as to the American side but I’d like to know how that differs from the Japanese side. I imagine there’s quite a bit of overlap in the reasons and much of it is simply a matter of degree. Yet there it quite a bit of difference between the adult movies of the two cultures that it seems like there should be a difference in the reasoning and attitudes of the women involved.
For extra credit you can throw in other parts of the world.
All I know is that fans of Japanese porno seem to hold their “AV” stars in higher esteem than fans of American porno do for American actresses. On the same porn message board, the threads about Japanese actresses have people praising the actresses’ beauty, their body, their enthusiasm, etc, while people respond to links to hot white women and have all sorts of vulgar and belittling things to say about them, being complimentary in the most insulting way possible, without being intentionally backhanded. (Pun not intended.)
Unfortunately, I’m not an expert on porn from either nation. That would be cool job, I would think.
I don’t know what is the motivation for women of either country, but porn itself is not particularly looked down on over here. It doesn’t have the same dirty image as in the US.
There have been a few actresses or TV personalities in Japan who made the jump from AV. The one most well-known is Ai Iijima, who just recently announced her retirement from TV at the age of 34. You can see her (and some others) in a video flashing her underwear at the obviously NSFW link
