Are there any sites on the world wide web where I can compare auto mechanics? I need some fairly heavy work done on my car, and I’m hoping to find a website that compares the work quality of various shops. The goal is to find a reputable shop as opposed to the crummy shop I usually do business with.
I believe this may be what you want:
Of course, this is only as good as the people who enter the information…
I find that the best sources for info on local mechanics are people who work as claim reps or adjusters for insurance companies in the area. Do you know anyone like that?
My advice is in my post in this thread: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=143255
…and supplemented by this:
I’m a member of an internet-based association of auto repair professionals. I’ve only met a portion of them in “real life,” but my experience is that those who choose a sponsoring membership (optional at extra cost) are ones who truly care about their trade, their colleagues, and their customers. I would have confidence in their abilities and ethics.
Go to www.iatn.net and select the Member Directory (http://www.iatn.net/dir/). You can look through a list of towns and cities in your state. Look for a shop or mechanic that is a sponsor (should be in blue).
