Computer people - my daughter is crying over AOL!

She’s crying because she has installed 4.0 and 5.0 and both won’t work. When you click it on the box saying “an error has occurred, reinstall” - followed by the dreaded “illegal operation box”. All we can get is primitive 3.0. I don’t know anything about computers. Can someone give us some guidance? Thank you for any help.

Hi Salingmind. Call AOL at 1-800-509-7538, and get to technical support. They are very good! You don’t have to be on-line when you call.

I think there may be some system requirements for 4.0 to successfully install. We’ll probably need some information from you, but you can skip to the end of this post to see my conclusions before going to that trouble.

Your operating system. Is it Windows 3.1, 95, 98, ME, 2000? You probably know this off the bat, but see below how to find out. If you have an Apple, forget this post–I’m afraid I don’t know anything about Apples, either.

Your memory, and processor.

  • If you have 95, 98, or ME, you should have an icon on your desktop (the main screen) that says “My Computer.” What you want to do is move your cursor over the icon and right-click on it. A little list will pop up under your cursor.

  • The last item on the list is “properties” go-ahead and click (regular left-clicks from here on) on that.

  • A new window will pop up that says “System Properties,” and its set up sort of like files in a drawer. Don’t mess with anything just yet, just see what that first page says.

There should be a list of info there that we can use. Next to “System” you should see what kind of windows you have. Mine says “Microsoft Windows 98.” Note what you have.

The last bit of info, next to “Computer” will tell us what kind of processor you have. Note exactly what that information is and let us know. It may say something like “GenuineIntel” or “Authentic AMD.” Note that and everything below it. Almost done.

Now move your cursor to the right side of this window. You should see a “tab” that says “Performance.” Click on that. The first listed item should be “Memory,” followed by something that will look like “32 MB of RAM.” We’ll need to know that, too.

I’ll tell you in advance that AOL 4.0 probably requires the following:

Windows 95 version B or C
16-32 MB of RAM (memory)
a Pentium-class processor of about 120 MHz or higher

I’m not certain about any of those, but I’d bet on it. If you are running anything older than that, well, you’ll probably have to stick to 3.0. On the other hand, Christmas is right around the corner…

Yep, really can’t say much without knowing what the operating system is. I think that one of your windoz files isn’t compatible. wsock32.dll probably.

We have Windows 95. It’s a Compaq Presario about 3 years old. I know nothing about computers except on-surf-off. I’ll try calling AOL, I can’t be the only one with this problem. We have had 4.0 for quite some time with no trouble, but 5.0 didn’t seem to agree with our computer, and now neither one will stay on. Thanks for the advice.

I had problems upgrading from 4.0 to 5.0. Eventually, I deleted both from my system, loosing everything in my filing cabinets, loaded in 4.0 from a disk, did a ScanDisk and it repaired some things, then did a disk defrag, signed on, downloaded 5.0 from AOL online and it finally worked.

I deleted AOL 4.0 shortly after. However, I cannot upgrade to 6.0 no matter what I do. I’m waiting for them to work out all of the bugs and then I’ll get a disk and install it.

I’m running it on a 486-DX 75 MHz Thinkpad laptop with 20 megs of RAM. It’s slow, but runs just fine. (I know, I know. I am SO ashamed. I succumbed and got a $5 a month AOL account. I figured it might be good for traveling, since AOL has access numbers everywhere.)

You don’t? How about oranges, then?

[SUP]Thanks! You just don’t get many straight lines as good as that these days.[/sup]

There are A LOT of AOL newsgroups you can read where all the questions have been answered before Im sure.

I had no problems with installing AOL 5.0 last year. Now, 6.0 comes along . . . I hesitate. I need to hear from other people’s assessment of it first before I go paddling up that creek.
