Computer Question

My laptop freezes up whenever I try to go to Facebook. Other websites work fine, but when I try Facebook, the damn thing freezes solid. This has happened five or six times in the last week.

Any thoughts, from those of you who are more computer-saavy than I?

Have you tried any alternate browser?

On my Firefox, it does that on certain social sites* until I clear my cache or change cookies. No idea why.
*facebook, yahoo with messenger open, google with chat on…

I think it may be a Facebook problem. I’ve been using Google Chrome and have noticed my browser freezing specifically if I’m on Facebook. Doesn’t happen with any other site. No idea what the issue may be, though.

It may mean that your computer is smarter than you are.

Didn’t samclem post about a similar problem awhile ago?

I think it’s the SDMB software. It’s becoming sentient, and resents the time that mods and admins spend on other websites. SDMB is a jealous board; thou shalt have no other sites but it.

Try disabling JavaScript and any add ons you have?

I will try clearing cookies and caches (although I do that fairly regularly), and see what happens. Then I’ll try disabling JavaScript (not sure how to do that?) and I’ll report back in a day or two.
Thnx for the ideas.

I agree it’s a facebook problem. I have had similar troubles with it in the past few days or weeks.

What kind of cookies do you switch to?

It is probably some script or plugin that hangs and makes the whole page hang.

As a first step try updating Java and Flash

As far as disabling Javascript is concerned, you might want to get NoScript, which lets you enable Javascript only for sites you trust (or more accurately, those sites that you can’t use without enabling it).

I had a similar problem with a site that I run for our company. It worked on all computers but one.

This is IE 9. In any case, going to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced (tab)>Reset Internet Explorer Options (a button). Fixed it right up.

peanut butter

I clear the cookies and let the site reload them. Means I have to log in again. Might not dhelp anything at all, but I do it periodically anyways.

Hmm. That didn’t work. How do I disable JavaScript?

Depends on your browser. If you post it here people can tell you, if you’re in a hurry google your browser + disable JavaScript.
