Why Does FB Always Bomb Out?

Why does Facebook always bomb out on me (via the PC, not an App) with “Out of Memory on Line ##” errors? At that point, what I see on my screen stops responding. (I WAG it is my PC and not the website that won’t respond.) What can I do to correct or overcome this?

What are you doing when it “bombs out”?

I’ve got a pretty powerful computer but my weak spot is the video processor. I’ve found that certain functions on Facebook make my browser (the latest Firefox with AdBlock) freeze:

  1. Clicking “send new message” from the messages notification dropdown. This brings up a chat/messaging window that freezes the browser. I think the AJAX involved in trying to load all previous messages with someone causes a freeze. But it also happens if I go to PM someone who I’ve not messaged before. The only way around this is to go to “see all” or the “Messages” link on the left them “New Message.”

  2. Using the chat/messaging window to chat with someone while I have MLB Gameday in another Firefox tab. MLB Gameday uses AJAX and HTML5. When my friend types, it freezes the browser before I can see what they said. When I go to type, it freezes while I type. Finally figured out to run Gameday in Chrome if I want to chat while “watching” a game.

  3. Sometimes a search or anything that brings up an AJAX auto-suggest, including tagging. If you type too fast or type then backspace and re-type, the auto-suggest just gets fucked up and everything freezes. Happened to me last week on search, and just today when trying to tag someone.

I haven’t tried to use Facebook in a different browser, cuz I’m lazy and like this browser. I’m not sure if the issues are browser-related or related to my computer’s lack of video power or just Facebook’s poor execution of AJAX. But I at least know how to work around #1 and #2. And I just curse and restart the browser when I get a freeze I can’t overcome.

Anyway, do you have any specifics?

I use the Mercury browser on my iPad. It’s like Safari, except it doesn’t completely suck.

But since the latest round of FB changes it’s been crashing almost constantly. Usually when attempting to post on FB. I’d bet $20 this is not Mercury’s fault, but FB’s. Assholes.
