I’m working in Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 5100.
I installed an update of RealPlayer and accidentally checked “make RealPlayer your default media player.” RealPlayer is apparently partnered with Mozilla Firefox, and there was a separate prompt to make Mozilla Firefox the default browser. I chose not to do this. I think this combination of options has disabled the sound on my computer and wonder if anyone knows how to fix this.
Your first mistake was having RealPlayer installed–it easily gets my vote for the most craptacular software ever developed. I highly recommend using the Real Alternative instead.
As for your sound problems, first go to your Control Panel and open up Sounds and Audio Devices. Check to see if anything is muted or disabled. Also check your Device Manager and see if the sound drivers are intact–if you see any devices with a (!) symbol on them, there is a problem; try reinstalling or updating the drivers for those devices.
