So we are all in agreement it’s: KOE-nun/nin/nan, and not kuh-NAAN or some girly Yurpean pronunciation, right?
That’s “Sir” to the likes of you! Unless you’d care to taste Conan’s steel…
Other than the rather metrosexually groomed eyebrows, nummy. I always thought Arnold was too bulky, he had the wrong type of muscling for a warrior, he had body building muscles.
I will probably want to make an effort to catch it in a theater instead of waiting to see it at home. Maybe it will be in one of those theaters that have the reserved seating, and extras [dammit, can’t remember who the chain is now…] so I can be a bit more comfy. Regular theaters can be pretty purgatorial for me physically. I only have so many spoons in a day.
Check out my earlier link, scroll down to the picture of the actor next to my favorite Farenzetta painting of Conan standing atop a pile of bodies with a damsel clutching his thigh. The eyebrows are the same.
Looks thoroughly watchable to me. My only gripe from the trailer is how blindingly white Conan’s teeth are for a barbarian, but given how anachronistic the rest of the movie is likely to be, that’s a laughable criticism.
I thought I recognized the Love Interest(?) but couldn’t place here until I realized she’s the new addition to the cast of Criminal Minds this season. Also, Crazy Half-Bald Chick is Rose McGowan?! I thought there was something familiar about her, but I never would have figured it out without a trip to the IMDB.
Why shouldn’t they be? He clearly eats very healthily.
There are pictures of the actor as Conan on imdb.com. He has an eye-popping rack, for a man.
I know I was forced to watch the old Conan. I will not need to be forced to watch this one. The new Conan is quite pleasing to look at.
WHEN WILL THIS MADNESS END??
Seriously, H-wood needs to stop remaking everything. No one has any talent these days to write anything, and the movies that get made are just awful.
We are Not Amused.
I do wish someone would make Red Nails or The Phoenix on the Sword rather than remaking Conan the Barbarian.
The problem with remaking the original stories is the need for black men who turn into apes, or apes who turn into black men, or ape-black-men hybrids, or whichever permutation on this theme Howard used in the particular story. As it is, this looks like it has potential to be a horrible mess or to be total stupid fun; I’ll wait to see what the word is.
hard to show shaggy eyebrows other than as a solid bar in comics …
and they are just too metrosexual … I don’t think Conan stopped pillaging for a waxing…
I’ll probably see it. It is sufficiently mindless action to keep me busy for a few hours. I usually will watch such things (Although even I couldn’t bring myself to watch the Dungeon Siege movie - even with Jason Stathom in it.)
I agree on the accents. Ahnuld’s accent actually improved the role, as it both removed context and identified Conan as a stranger to the others involved. In the trailer there’s a definite, modern American accent, which makes the whole thing feel very Xena to me.
We’ll see what happens. Personally, I think of Conan as being like Karsa Orlong. Essentially a barbaric and unstoppable warrior. Karsa is all about freedom, too, though in his case he wants to “free” everyone from civilization by destroying everything civilized.
People see Karsa as a hero when he does things like kill a group of slavers and freeing the slaves. But then again he also makes it clear that the freed slaves had better enjoy their lives because when he comes back with his people he’ll be making a clean sweep of the entire globe.

I’m a huge Conan fan and I think this looks great. I WAS worrier earlier before, when all I had to go on were some stills. This looks like a good interpretation of the Hyborean world, and I’ve no issue with the selection of Momoa now.
However.
HE NEEDS CONTACTS. If he’s wearing some I can’t see them anywhere. Conan has piercing blue eyes, black hair, and is a bronzey color from all his traveling in the south. He is simply described as rather grim and neither ugly nor handsome. The Eyes though, are important! Why do you need to mess with such a simple description hollywood?
Meh. At any rate this looks like a good movie, and if they don’t take excessive liberties with the character then it should be damn good fun. Also Conan is neither a hero, nor a villain traditionally. He is probably best described as a chaotic neutral. He has been shown in all stories, original, and expanded to act heroically when it suits him, while also stealing, wenching, and generally causing a violent, disturbing fuss. The biggest thing that this trailer has gotten wrong so far is not showing any sense of humor. Conan is also a character of “gigantic mirth”, it’s part of what makes him so likeable.
Why on earth are the eyes important? Granted it’s been about five years since I read the Howard stories (some recent anthology), but the eyes aren’t at all what I remember about him.
This, on the other hand, gets at his nature and looks to be gotten wrong in the movie. Khal Drogo, his character from A Game of Thrones, convey’s Conan’s essential violent, compelling, unpredictable nature beautifully. The movie looks like they’ll turn him into a noble savage, a cross between Tarzan and John McClane, which isn’t nearly so interesting to me.
Howard mentions them a lot. No big deal, but it would be a nice accurate detail.
I read somewhere that Jason has green eyes (which is fine by me!) that can easily be made blue with contacts. I don’t know if they did that, but if this Conan has piercing green eyes instead of blue, I’m not going to complain one bit.
Green eyes are killer.
Depends on how you see it. Howard was big into physical descriptions of the various peoples of the hyborean world. You could tell Gundermen from Kothians, Stygians from Aquilonians merely by glancing at them. Granted in our more PC, and scientifically accurate times it’s not such a big deal; but Howard who is usually fairly vague about true details mentions Conan’s eyes frequently. Blue is somewhat unusual among Cimmerians, and hardly ever seen south of that remote country at all. Nearly all of Conan’s adventures take place south of the borderlands, itself south of Cimmeria. In many stories he’s even accused of being a demon or demon spawn because of them. It is his most striking physical feature apart from his size. He is otherwise unremarkable being neither handsome nor ugly, nor having any obvious facial or physical attributes that would pick him out among other men of his nation and size.
An average wanted poster would probably in modern translation read:
Wanted: “Conan of Cimmeria” : Height 6’6*, 250 lbs. Black hair, Blue eyes, Lighter skinned foreigner. Report sightings to nearest imperial guard post.
- He is described as being 6’0 and 180 at the age of fifteen. I’m extrapolating based upon further descriptions of him towering head and shoulders above the populace, but being a head shorter than the seven foot giants he occasionally battles.
