Evenin’ all. I see Thanksgiving preparations are underway for the Murkins amongst us! My mouth is still watering from the Pioneer Woman’s pictorial recipe for Caramel Pumpkin Gingersnap Cheesecake! If any of you get around to making it, please send me some through the CD drive! Kthxbai!
Counting down the weeks to holiday now - only 11 days of work left, since most of the last week before we leave is public holidays (for Eid al Adha)!
I’m glad you (kinda, sorta, maybe) got your 'pooter problems sorted Pie.
No huhu, Pie, it’s tough trying to diagnose long distance so I like to try to give a range of possibilities starting from most likely to least so you have a bread crumb trail to follow. Since reinstalling Flash is still making for crashy crashy (and I’m assuming the crashing is with both browsers, yes?) If you like, we can keep trying to track down your issue… Himself says next trick is to uninstall Flash in safe mode (while computer is booting, keep hitting F5 until you get the boot manager, then choose “start in safe mode”) because Adobe is intrusive and even though it SAYS you uninstalled it, it lies like a cheap rug and will leave hooks behind that are still corrupted so it’s screwing up the new Flash installation. Try that, let me know how that does. If that don’t fix it we’re looking fishy eye at your video driver. Also, did you install K-Lite? I’d still do that if I were you because it makes media handling much easier and quicker.
Yr welcome, herbs! It makes my brain hurt to realize people are still using IE because it’s so damned sucky. I only use it for Netflix (stoopit DRM requirements, grrrr!) and updating from the Microsoft site and even then I get all annoyed at being forced back into it. If you want some suggestions for kewl add ons let me know–I’ve tried a bunch of 'em! I’m happy that I finally got to upgrade to FF 3 because Gmail FINALLY got themes. I had a Gmail skin add on that was incompatible with FF 3 but I really dislike the look of basic Gmail so I wouldn’t upgrade until I had an alternative. Now I do and I’m all happy!
I made my Infinitely Stretchy Chicken Curry-Like Substance last night. Since I wanted brown rice for it (if I use white rice I’ll cook it all together with the chicken) I started two cups of brown rice with six cups water boiling, with some Chicken Better Than Bouillon (I love that stuff!) and turmeric added. When it was almost tender, about 45 minutes or so, I dumped in a can of stewed tomatoes and a big handful of raisins. Then in a skillet I started sauteeing two frozen slabs of boneless skinless chicken breast, cutting it up into small chunks as it thawed. I added about 7-10 cloves of garlic, chopped roughly. When the chicken was nearly cooked I added a bunch of thin sliced onions and red bell peppers, grated a big chunk of fresh ginger into it, then spiced the hell out of it. I added several tablespoons of curry powder, couple tablespoons of cumin, some cinnamon, more turmeric, paprika, a dash of chipotle powder and a dash of crushed red pepper and maybe a half cup of water to get it all moist and sauce-y. Let that simmer for a few minutes, then combined the chicken with the rice mixture, set it on a low simmer and let it go for about a half hour. Then I ate a ton of it! In summer when I make this stuff I also tend to add other fruit to it–canteloupe or honeydew melon, peaches or nectarines, it sounds really weird but the sweetness offsets the spice and it’s totally nommy. Mop it up with naan bread for maximum satisfaction! This is one of my endless line of “how to make a smidgen of chicken feed a multitude” recipes…
It’s sunny today and Himself says he’s going to join me and the doggies for a bike ride–he needs the exercise, he’s turning into a mushroom!
Break. Fridge and freezer have been cleaned, purged, and organized. The turkey is in the fridge starting to un-freeze. We cleaned up the pile of stuff that was accumulating outside the back door - the trailer is full for a dump run. **FCD **and the kids are finished the trim downstairs. I’m about to tidy the kitchen and start cooking. I think after next weekend, I may actually have time to relax!!
Oh, my. That pumpkin cheesecake sounds wonderful. I’ve added a link to the blog. And added the stretchy chicken as well.
Are you sure you don’t want to clean my fridge, FCM? That’s one of the chores I’m not doing right now.
We went to brunch after mass and I had the world’s largest chicken quesadilla. Lots of chicken. And black beans. And red bell pepper and onion. With salsa, sour cream and guacamole on the side. Boy, was it yum! I brought the last 1/3 or so of it home because I couldn’t finish it.
Now I need to rake and then continue with the household de-junking.
Howdy, all. Another day of working. Be still my beating heart.
The Idiots had another lovely run at the school with their doggie buddy Layla the German shepherd. Although Rusty spent much of the time sitting on Layla’s human’s feet and getting skritched. Many comments were made about his “bony ass,” which is the understatement of the year – that dog’s hip bones can carve holes in your feet. Why he insists on sitting on feet we’ll never know, but it’s his favorite position. Stoopit dog!
Papa Tigs got generous today – I’ve had an el cheapo laser fax/copier (not flatbed) that I got a few years ago, and the paper feed decided to quite altogether. So rather than even try to fix it, he decided I needed a new all-in-one flatbed fax/copier/scanner/printer, so he went out and bought me one on the spot! Now I need to decide whether I want to put it where my current printer is on my desk or reverse them and put it where the fax was on the little file cabinet next to my desk. But in any case, I also have to find a USB cable. Why do they sell a piece of equipment that needs a USB cable and then don’t actually enclose one? I will never understand these things. But prices sure have gone down; this one cost under $100. I remember when they weren’t available for six times that price. Crazy.
Someone on our local freecycle list offered a two-month supply of NutriSystem food, so we snagged it just so we could see what it’s actually like. After hearing all the commercials for years, we’ve been curious, but not curious enough to spend actual money on it. If nothing else, it’s stuff I can eat for breakfasts and lunches and snacks here at home, although I’m sure Papa Tigs can also take some of it in for lunches and snacks (although with the prices at the hospital chow hall, it’s hardly worth it – he normally gets a good, well-balanced lunch for under $1.50, thanks to Your Tax Dollars At Work). But in any case, now we can see what it’s like without putting ourselves on their “we’ll spam you forever!” list.
I’ve been trying all day to get into the Dr. Pepper website to get my coupon for a free Dr. Pepper, to no avail. That poor site is about to curl up and die. Not that I blame it. Has anyone else actually succeeded?
I’m not thinking about pumpkin cheesecake! Lalala, I can’t hear you! (Although Papa Tigs did pick me up some homemade praline fudge from the Amish market. I ate about 1/4 of the single chunk of it he brought home, and it was not only good enough to die for but so rich it nearly made me sick! Tonight if I have some again, I’m having no more than 1/8 of it!)
I am pleased to announce that I have a newly organized ever so neat master bedroom closet. Go me! JoeDawg’s daddy and partner are comin’ over in a bit to “go through the mission barrel”, meaning to vulture my old shirts and stuff. Most of it will go to the brother of a friend of JoeDawg’s daddy who has been, shall we say, a “guest” of the state of Alabama Department of Corrections for the past five years. Hey, the guy’s workin’ and needs clothes so if’n I got stuff he can use, then good. Thus, I have an organized, neat closet once again. The never worn shirts are in there even so they may be worn. I need pants however. I need to buy some new pants so I can clear out older pants. Pants I buy when I need. It’s shirts I’m addicted to. Hey, we all have to have at least one vice!
In other news, I have possibly gone insane. As I post there are four layers of a Lane Cake bakin’ away. I have never ever made a cake from scratch. I’m not much of a baker. Cake mixes are my friend. So, I’m bakin’ a cake from scratch and still have to do a boiled icing. Why? I have no idea. Three weeks ago at a gatherin’ the subject of Lane Cake came up. All us southern types remember Lane Cake from when we were humanlets. I haven’t had one in years. I remember it as good. So, a couple weeks ago I bought all the ingredients. What prompted the bakin’ along with closet cleanin’ is the fact that a box of raisins fell out of a kitchen cabinet. It was a sign. Also it reminded me that’s why I bought the raisins. Thus, four layers of a cake from scratch are bakin’ away. This will either be really good or a bad idea.
I hear “howdyin’”. That means JoeDawgDaddy and partner are here. Ol’ y’all know who just told ‘em what’s in the oven and that I’ve lost my mind. I’m glad I have such good support for my bakin’ endeavors. I hope the cake is good just for that! I’ll tell him he can’t have any.
Nah. He’d just go all sad puppy dog eyes on me and that works everytime dangit!
Hey Mom! I made meatballs and sketties last night! Today since it’s so beautiful out (I’m actually running the air conditioner!) we’re having baby back ribs and accoutrements…
I’m off tomorrow, so I only washed towels and undies today. I shopped for groceries and managed to only spend $250. Holidays are 'spensive! Nah - I got some extra stuff that was on sale, too. My freezer was looking empty! I told y’all my vice is food shopping.
Yesterday we gave away our old TV with the blurry picture for free on Craigslist. The couple had a cute little baby with them. I was the dumbass who asked the mom if she had another one on the way. “No, I’m just fat!” she said with a laugh. :smack: I apologized, but I’m sure that wasn’t good enough.
I’m racking my brain for MMP ideas. I have a couple of thoughts.
Ok. Boiled Icing is now on my list of things that are a PITA. It felt like it took forever to make that icing! Oh, I did not put candied cherries in. Candied cherries are teh evil. I could have done a better job at thickening the icing I think, but overall the cake looks good. The cake should be really moist. I followed that time honored tradition of brushing some of the bourbon on the cake layers while they were still warm so it would soak in. This definitely ain’t a cake for teetotalers and younguns.
gt Lane and Red Velvet cakes are the quintessential southern cakes. A Lane Cake should “set” for two to three days before cuttin’. That is to allow for the moisture, AKA hooch, to soak in good.
TDay dessert time should be interestin’.
Speakin’ of which, I have a turkey and a ham thawin’ in the beerator. I have no idea why there just had to be ham and turkey. I think I might be channelin’ a little ol’ southern church lady this year.
We ate some leftover sketty sauce over penne. Dishwasher is washing dishes. Laundry is done. Latest batch of sketty sauce is in the freezer, as are all the meatballs. We’re all chilling.
I need to make a shopping list and a to-do list for the rest of the week.
Hope I don’t regret not taking the week off. I may bail on Weds - we shall see.
Swampy, I had just read about the Lane cake tradition on roadfood! Wish I could have a taste of that cake, even though that boiled icing is a PITA to make. Hurrah for you, for making it from scratch, because it does sound like a real project. Hope it all turns out good on Turkey day.
Back to work tomorrow; I’m working all week (except for Thursday, of course). I too hope I don’t regret that, but I don’t have a big crowd coming like some folks do !
It has been a relaxing weekend, fortunately, although I admit to not wanting to go back to work. Gah, I have no idea when I might ever be able to retire, damn economy! If ya have a good job, ya better hold on to it.
The (somewhat) expensive antenna I bought a few years ago reels in digital channels! Wooooooot!!! I can actually see a bunch of channels, all crisp and digital like. With no further investment. Sweeeeeet!!! (Which is actually more excited than I feel, since I nearly never watch TV.)
I pretty much vegged out all evening and am now crawling into bed before the new week starts.
I worked again today. I took a 4 hour lunch to go watch a Canes game. They lost, and sucked doing it. I paid my bills, and have enough to buy a new dryer..
Next stop–go back into safe mode, go to the Device Manager and uninstall the display adapter then reboot back into normal mode and it should find the driver, go back into Device Manager and make sure it finds the display and installs the driver, then test it again. If that doesn’t work, just for shits & grins try installing Safari to see if that will allow Flash to work. If you have three browsers all crashing on Flash, then you’ve got something more integrated that’s broken, and it’ll be something that’s not easily diagnosed over a message board! Explorer itself–not just the browser part of Explorer, but the whole damned shell could be corrupted and if that’s the case it could be a big narsty mess to fix.
Another thing you might try is to go to the earliest restore point you have available, one from back before this Flash issue started and just restore–it’s worth a try. This is operating on the assumption that there was a point when you COULD use Flash with this computer–this is the case, correct? If so, then an earlier restore point could be your easiest fix.
