Confessions of A Shirtaholic… The MMP

Hmmm… I think you and I are about the same size, aren’t we Swampy?..

I have shirt envy. I want some new shirts. A lot of my favorite shirts have mysteriously shrunk. Not around, I’ve shrunk in the around sense, in length. Could I be getting taller?

Bobbio, first of all, greens do not come in cans. One purchases greens fresh from the greengrocer, or wherever. We always cook our greens by just briefly sauteeing too much chopped garlic in some olive oil, then tossing in the fresh greens and cooking them just til they wilt. Not a big fan of collards in any case, though.

Puggy, I’ve done terrible, bloody things to my fingers with knives over the years, but never a knee. How did you manage that?
Maybe you should look at some of the original series MAC knives. They have rounded points. I have a couple and they’re really good knives. 'Spensive tho.

Did the cops share the little micreants IDs with you, Welby? Remember; revenge is a dish better served cold.

Sounds like my day, from the other side of the desk! Students, advising, planning internships…

EEEK Welby! I hope those bastids get what they deserve. And a lot of fines and community service on top of it. They should have to shovel your Elderly Neighbors sidewalk all winter. (If you live somewhere with snow that is…if not, substitute something else.)

I’m with you on that, and that’s my intent. Holiday meals call for cooking everything the old fashioned way.

Welby, this is a perfect scenario to justify retroactive abortion.

I promise, I’m not one of the idiots that goes in with no idea what’s required. I’ve got my spreadsheet of what I’ve done and what I need all printed out, plus the catalog and semester schedule. I am organized

And I sort of know where the offices are that I need to go to. Vaguely.

On the subject of knives, has anybody had any experience with ceramic knives, like [URL=http://www.metrokitchen.com/about_kyocera

Hi all! - This is my first excursion into MMP (with all of the earlier food threads, I don’t know how I missed this over the years!)

Missed last weeks MMP (drooled a lot, tho) -
They look beautiful (if pricey) & the thought of not having to sharpen them again in my lifetime is really tempting - I have 4 or 5 knives that I use on a daily basis, and they’re all dull right now (as I found when I tried to cut up a halibut roast into steaks yesterday - those buggers have tough skins!)

Hi everybody!

I’m in Warsaw again, posting from my hotel room instead of preparing my work for tomorrow… I’ll get to it yet. Really. Real soon now!

I don’t own too many of anything, certainly not new stuff. I do sometimes have problems getting rid of old clothes, so it seems like I have more than I really do. And even then it isn’t much!

Hi Tyger, missed you last week! Welcome back  Good luck with the move!

Hi all. I must admit, I don’t really have much in the way of clothes that fit. Most of them are too big, but for some odd reason, I haven’t gotten rid of them yet.

I’m down to one pair of jeans that fit, and a couple of pair of slacks. Even the slacks are loose. I have a total of maybe five or six shirts and sweaters that fit, the rest are too big.

I need to shop for clothes, but it’s just not in the budget right now.

I stayed home today. I’m just plum tuckered out and have a raging headache to boot. I’ll take it as a vacation day instead of a sick day though.

welby, I’d be highly pissed too. Too bad you can’t make them go shovel elephant shit for about 10 years.

I’ll get this link thing figured out yet - maybe (earlier post was very disjointed)

anyway, here

The knives are very tempting - maybe this year’s Christmas request? But has anybody used them?

Welcome KatieRoo!

Bobbio, I’m wondering why nobody ran on the “you can abort 'em until they’re 18” platform. I’d have voted for them. Twice.

Bumba, it looks like I’ll get to talk to the little jerk’s parents tonight. I can’t wait! Hopefully they’ll be all about some Mousie’s community service idea. I’ve been putting off the raking, the moving of the shed, and about a dozen other dirty, tiring, hateful tasks all summer. I’m thinking that 4 teenagers would be very useful to have around. If possible, I think I’ll have them move the compost pile to the other end of the yard first. Then they can start on the really crappy tasks. I’m thinking about tacking another 100 bucks on the bill for having to change my neighbor’s tires too.

If the parents decide that community service works, I’ll come back to you guys for ideas.

I finally cleared out my linen closet this weekend. 2 large garbage bags of sheets! I didn’t realize I had so many sheets! I like how neat my linen closet looks now: Sheets and blankets on one shelf, towels on another, instead of them being all smushed together across 3 different shelves. I also got rid of some clothes. I made the decision that since I hate that top, why do I keep wearing it? Away with it! I need to dispose of some shoes, too. But I love them all, how will I ever choose?

I am working on an extremely boring project right now. You know the kind that makes your eyes water because you keep yawning? The information started out clear and concise, but by the time my boss is done with it, it will be unusable. It’s a living, I guess. Gosh, look at the time, it’s lunchtime. I’m exactly halfway through, so I hope to finish by the end of the day. Maybe if I stayed off the SD for the rest of the day…Nah.

welby, I already gave you an idea. However, I can see that you probably don’t keep an elephant in your back yard or anything, so that probably wouldn’t work.

If the parents are amenable to community for service for the little shits, I’d make them do the ickiest, grossest work I could find for them. The compost pile is a good start. I’d make them move it twice, but I’m just mean that way.

Hi, Ellen! Haven’t seen you around in a while. Do you have cute kid pics to show us?

Sounds like there are lots of {{{hugs}}} needed. Please pass around as needed.

So on Friday I think I said we were going to try to go to a restaurant that we’ve been trying to try for 2 1/2 years and 5 attempts. Well… we still haven’t succeeded. They’re not open for lunch on Saturdays now, and we didn’t feel like hanging out for 4 hours until they opened for dinner. But it least it looks like their hours are more set now so we should be able to plan a Saturday night dinner sometime and actually get to try it. And instead we had good Thai food with a friend instead. So not a total loss.

Afterwards, we went to a yarn shop. Wow! Even KT had fun looking around. That might be because I said if he picked out yarn, I’d make him a scarf. He found the alpaca and got really excited. So eventually I’ll make him a charcoal gray alpaca scarf. And I picked up enough Noro to make two scarves in this style (but not those colors). I’m really really excited about that.

We also spent 3 hours wandering around Ikea. I was exhausted by the end, but some Swedish meatballs and a cinnamon bun helped that.

Has anyone seen **Haze **in a while? She reappeared and then disappeared again. We miss you Haze!

Be my student, please?

I bet Lunch would share you with me…

soapy and bumba, I am the poster child for klutziness. I probably shouldn’t be allowed to use sharp objects at all. I once dropped an Exacto blade up to the hilt in my foot. In yesterday’s incident, the knife I was using slipped out of my hand and I raised my knee to deflect it from impaling a begging dog. It worked better than I anticipated. The stew, however, was not knee meat (too fatty) or dog, for that matter, but good old-fashioned beef chuck.

welby, that really bites.

Lo, ellen!

Waves to nooney!

Howdy Y’all! Glad everybody liked the op. It came about yesterday when I was rootin’ through those two closets full of shirts. I figured everybody would be entertained by my collection. BBBobbio of course my shirts are f-aaaaaa-bu-lous! Would I have any other kind?

Ya know, I coulda sworn I had put a how to cook collards recipe in the mumper recipe blog but I guess not. Anywho, Rebo and Ellen covered the essentials pretty well. I will be cookin’ collards for Turkey Day, of course.

Oh and Hi Ellen, welby, Bumba, Tyger and others I’ve missed!

welby that sucks! Work the little bastids hard and long. Put 'em away wet even! The sobs need to pay for what they did. I hope all the neighbors have long, hard, horrible chores all lined up too.

Tonight is men’s night at church. Ima go even though I didn’t go get churched yesterday. I may be a heathen, but I’d never miss steak night. Gotta have those priorities ya know.

Ok, need to get my hiney in gear. Ol’ y’all know who will be here soon.

Later Y’all!

Hugs to all…

Just so you know, I’ve made my dr. appointment. December 3rd was the first available at the time that I needed. But at least the appointment was made. Otherwise, I’m extremely tired and cranky. That could have something to do with the fact that I just spent $672 on supplies this afternoon and then I had to send GilaMonster shopping this evening to get more stuff for tomorrow. Actually, this happens everytime that I make a major supply run to Cleveland. Normally it wouldn’t bother me, it’s just the lack of sleep.

We haz new doggie! His name is Bear, he’s a lab/huskymix who’s probably about 8-9 months old. He was adopted from the Humane Society by a nice young couple who found out in about a month that this is NOT a couch potato who’s suitable for living in an apartment. We went out to see him yesterday, and took him to the local dog park to see how he got along with Widget and other dogs–the answer is “just fine!” The guy wanted his wife to have a chance to say goodbye so they brought him over to us last night. She was very upset, but enjoyed watching the dogs chase each other around our backyard, and I let her know that I’m totally open to sending her email updates and pictures and that if she wants to come visit that’s cool with us. By the time she left she was okay with leaving him behind, I felt very sad for her but this really isn’t a dog that will be happy getting a couple walks a day on a leash and spending a lot of time in a crate.

Things we have learned about Bear already–he had never dealt with cats, but now knows they are devils who will make your nose hurt if you mess with them. He is very fast, but still awfully klutzy. He likes to fetch. He likes to get up at night and eat cat food and chew bones. He will chew bones for hours if he has the chance. He does not, however, chew things that aren’t his. He has enough energy for any two regular dogs but isn’t hyper or frenetic–he just likes to be moving all the time when he isn’t sleeping or chewing on a bone. He has scary laser eyes. He will play for as long as anyone will play back, then he will play all by himself. He isn’t terribly socialized yet, but wants to learn.

Himself is over the moon–by some odd happenstance, Bear is the first dog that he’s ever had 100% control over picking and adopting. He’s always inherited other people’s dogs or just had them fall in his lap, so this is a big deal for him. I stood back and let him do all the initial contact, only interfering insomuch as I was required to make sure Widget behaved. I figure it’s fair–Widget is totally bonded to me and is pretty much a one-person dog so Himself should have a dog that reflects his preference as to breed and temperament, and Bear is right up his alley. I can’t wait to have my daughter’s dog over for a play date, she and Bear will wear each other out and it’ll be funny as hell to see who can last the longest, energy-wise!

As to the OP, I’m a sheets and towels buyer. I can’t have enough! Egyptian cotton sheets in 600+ thread count, flannel sheets, knit jersey sheets–along with quilts and comforters and blankets and down pillows! And big fluffy towels in matching sets with all the rugs color coordinated–and none of them are pastel and especially NOT PINK! All my sheets and towels are in jewel tones, dark blue, emerald/hunter green, purple, the only exceptions are a few sage toned items–I like my bed and bath to be lush and comfy and pretty to look at. Not one single speck of polyester, either!

Welby, that sucks. Do you have a large dog that craps hugely? Because shovelling dog shit in the rain is the nastiest chore there is. Especially if all you have is one of those short personal entrenching tools so you have to get right up close and personal. Perhaps you have a large area of yard that needs to be prepped for a garden, grubbing up all the thatched grass and turning over the sod by hand. Lots of rocks would be a plus, especially if they all needed to be made into a lovely retaining wall for your raised plant beds. Or maybe you’ve always yearned for a lovely water feature but hesitated because digging it out would be such hard work, or maybe your driveway needs resurfacing. Mmm, asphalt!

Pugs, you are silly. Knives are for cutting food, not knees! Kati, those Kyocera knives look very tempting…

Taxi, that’s a gorgeous pattern–I like the colors! It’s a nice small stripe, doesn’t look too “Where’s Waldo-ish.”

Sorry about your grandma, mousie, keep us posted, 'kay?

Oh, and the interview went well, so I have hopes that this will lead somewhere–of course, I ALWAYS think that, so we’ll see! I’ll know by the end of the week…

Bear is so cute!!!

I love his tipped over ears.

His coat is so shiny, too!

Welcome, KatiRoo! I can’t help you with knife info - I’ve been using my Cutco knives since 1975. With luck, the guys from last week’s MMP who knew all about knives will pop in and maybe help you out.

I’m not any kind of clothes-a-holic. To me, clothing is a necessary evil, and as long as it’s comfortable, it’s good for me. My spousal unit, on the other hand, has far too many shirts. He buys them from every place he works (just bought 4 new ones last week) and he never gets rid of them. If he sees a shirt he likes, he buys it. He decided he likes bowling shirts after watching way too many episodes of Two and a Half Men, so he got half a dozen of them.

But two weeks ago, I asked him to purge. I now have 2 garbage bags full of shirts and some pants that he no longer wears. Lucky for me, I got a call on Friday from AMVETS - they’re going to be in the neighborhood this week. Daughter purged 2 bags worth of stuff from her closet, and I got rid of half a dozen shirts I no longer wear.

Today, I had my annual eval with my boss. I done good. Got a nice raise and a nice little bonus. For all that people bitch about the pay-for-performance, it’s certainly worked for me. I’m making more than I would have had we stayed under the GS system. So go me!

And to top off my day, I cleaned the dining room carpet when I got home from work. I think I deserve cake.
