An old childhood friend of mine just hit the state lotto for 9m. We grew up as next door nieghbors in the country and got into all kinds of shit before we lost track after graduation.
Although I haven’t seen him in many years, I thought it would be rude not to send a note of congratulations. This sparked a debate among my family, about half say do it and the others say that he has so many old friends coming out of the woodwork that it would make me look like a worm.
So do I congratulate an old friend or does any future attempt to communicate with him brand me as a sponge?
FTR, I would just send a simple congratulation card w/sig, no “remember when” or “lets do lunch”.
I think it would look a bit suspicious. It would be one thing if he had sent you an announcement (like a wedding or graduation announcement.) But if you haven’t otherwise been corresponding with him it might seem a little odd. However, if you happen to run into him at the grocery store or something, congratulations would certainly be in order.
Hey! What is wrong with being a sponge. I say write to him and hit him up for a large contribution to reducing your debt. You do not know when the next time you will have such a great opportunity to use a little person you met along the way.
[sub]geez, what is up with people and their principles, next thing you know there will be honesty and good will towards mankind[/sub]
