Pot should be legalized.
Murder is bad - tsk tsk.
If in this man’s position, looking to alleviate the pain, I’d probably turn to the wacky-week myself.
However -
a.) He knew it was illegal.
2.) He got busted.
III.) He got an extreme sentence
d.) The sentence got reduced.
5.) He is still guilty of the crime charged, even with reduced sentence.
VI.) Murders should stay in jail - forever.
My take is the guy should remain in jail, afterall he BROKE THE LAW. Until the law is changed, you do the crime you do the time. However, he should see “freedom” far earlier than the scum bags who got out.
In theory, maybe. But in reality, criminals get released all the time. My problem with this Piece of Fuck is that he’d release violent criminals over someone growing medical marijuana, because in some twisted right-wing fascist logic, being seen as soft on ‘drugs’ is worse than being seen as soft on assault, rape or murder. Lumping pot - particularly medical marijuana - into remotely the same arena as things like crack or heroin is offensively stupid.
Also significant, he ignores the unanimous wishes of his own parole board in bypassing this inmate. He’s playing politics with people’s lives in the cruelest way, to advance his own misguided policy ends.
Thanks to all for your further insights into what a waste of space Keating is. I had no idea his prickdom was so far-reaching in its depth and scope.
(Don’t label me a liberal, either. I’m probably closer to being a Republican than I am a Democrat.)
I just wanted to pick up on the sentence this guy got because things have changed in the UK in the last few years. This kind of offence has been seriously downgraded to the extent that in the UK, ‘possession’ of not insignificant quantities usually results in a verbal ticking off and no record. Prosecutions against people who proven medical conditions and who grow grass have almost ceased. But it is illegal and can in theory, under the present law, lead to prison.
Reason for the downgrading and the cessation of prosecution’s is because the authorities COULDN’T GET SUCCESSFUL PROSECTIONS. Jury’s returned perverse verdicts (that is, contrary to all the evidence) because they didn’t agree with the sentencing guideline and/or the law itself. So, those guidelines were dramatically reduced and, in the case of proven medical conditions, they just give up trying to prosecute unless in extreme circumstances.
The judge in THIS guy’s case presumably followed sentencing guidelines BUT this guy couldn’t be in prison unless his peers found him guilty. Motto: Ignore the law and follow your conscious, um when appropriate.
Doesn’t explain the unsavoury man in power…so who voted for him and why ?
Midwestern United States = Bible Belt= conservative
Oklahoma = The Bible Belt Buckle =ultraconservative
London, it’s simple math. There are more bible belt conservatives in Oklahoma than there are of us liberal yellow dog democrats. ( defination of yellow dog democrat is someone who would rather vote for a yellow dog walking down the street as to vote for a republican. )
But you can’t just blame the conservative bible belt repubs for this asshole’s actions…alot of those people had no idea what kind of guy they were electing and what he was capable of doing once in office. I know of at least two people in my town that have changed their party affiliation to democrat ( very rare) because this guy has been such a pitiful excuse for a governer that they are embarrassed.
What an interesting mixture you have: Insular religion in bed with knee jerk sentencing and/or law and a career politician to tuck them in at night. Sounds cosy.
Yep, ‘Best Album of the 80’s’ as voted by your very own Rolling Stone mag (only one decade ! ?). Once met Strummer by chance in a courtroom and offered my commiserations outside afterwards……but better save that for another thread.
We seem to have a concensus forming here. Come the Revolution, he goes to the wall. Only question is which position, I don’t think he rates number one (with a bullet)
Keep in mind, though, that to liquidate any really significant number of ignorant trodlodyte peckerwoods, we’ll pretty much have to nuke Texas. And I’ve still got kinfolk living there.
Other than that, theres a lot to be said for it.
