In Olympic women’s hocky, the Americans won quite handily against the Swiss, 6-0, and the Canadians merrily stomped the Italians into the ice, 16-0 (can’t find a link, yet.) Now let’s do it against the Germans and the Russians!
Whee! Excellent!
16-0?!? Was that a typo? Holy five-hole, Batman!
wolf whistle, cheering
Of course, you realize we may very well be facing each other in the finals…
Nope, not a typo. When I was watching the game, it seemed like every time I got up and came back, the Canadians had scored another goal!

Oh, that’s okay. We’ll try not to hurt you too bad…
Women’s hockey? Are there fights?
I don’t think there is even checking.
I got distracted when the score was 7-0! I know that the Italians aren’t known for their hockey, but damn!
There was an article in the paper about women’s hockey. IIRC someone asked the Gereman team if they had a chance to beat USA or canada. they said no way.
Evereyone else is playing for bronze.
Brian
Italy isn’t playing for bronze. They are playing for try-not-to-embarrass-ourselves. After round one I’d say that didn’t go too well. The only reason they are in the in the tournament is that the home team qualifies automatically. They should have just passed on the offer.
It’s not like the results are that surprising. Since hockey has been included in the winter Olympics, the U.S. and Canadian teams have rolled over everyone except each other. Nobody (apart from the main rivals) has come close to beating either team. The combined points from those games are:
USA vs Everybody Except Canada: 57-4
Canada vs Everybody Except USA: 57-8
With hope, the promise of Olympic gold will help to even things out in future competitions.
In the meantime, the hockey competition at Turin is all about Canada reasserting its domination over the USA and restoring the natural order of things.
Canada vs. Russia in Women’s Hockey.
It’s near the end of the first period.
The Canadians are wiping the ice with the Russians.
What on earth possessed the IIHF to make goal differential count for “home-ice advantage”* in the gold medal round? This is not good for women’s hockey.
- For those who don’t know, the “home team” in a hockey game gets to change their players after the away team has during every stoppage in play. That means that the home team can put out their best defensive players up against the away team’s best offensive players, which can be a big advantage.
Bring it, Yanks.
12-0 Canada.
Seriously, the IIHF should be hit with a stick upside the head for making home-ice advantage dependant on goal differential.
Canada vs Russia - 12 : 0!!!
Go, ladies, go!!!
The IIHF seems to have a problem running the Olympic tournaments. Remember at Salt Lake where they held the qualifiers for the Olympics in the middle of the NHL season? :smack:
And gave Canada, the US, Sweden, the Czechs, Russia and Finland a bye into the tournament? :smack:
