Congressman Anthony Weiner: My Twitter account was hacked! The weiner photo is not mine!

You (and your conservative cohort) really really want this to become a big deal. What a pity for you that nothing of the sort is going to happen. He will win his re-election handily and there will be no fallout for the Democratic party over this. Even if the GOP, disingenuous as ever, fulminates about the “lies! lies! LIES!”

Feel free to harp on it if you like though, it’s no skin of my ass (nor, I suppose, off Dio’s) if the Republicans want to devote themselves to a fool’s errand.

You think I’m biased against Democrats? That’s laughable. In any case, I find idiotic, irrational behavior and lying to be equally unacceptable in politicians from both parties. And I’m not willing to accept or overlook such behavior from a politician because I agree with his political positions.

There are two scandals here:

  1. Lewd photos sent between consenting adults

  2. Lies and coverups
The lewd photos? Meh. I don’t really care. What bothers me are the bold lies and coverups. He wasn’t just saying wishy-washy denials. He came out and actually said “I did not send that photo to that woman.” To me that is the true moral failing.

I don’t think he should be ousted for the photos. I think he should be ousted for looking everyone in the face and outright lying.

Well, last I checked, Jesus isn’t running for elected office, so we have to accept who we get. As long as votes the right way, who cares?

But you several times stated Weiner was the victim of a crime. You advanced no evidence for this - simply stated it as fact. It turns out there was no such evidence and it was not a fact.

I don’t think this is the crime of the century or anything, but neither do I agree it’s disingenuous to mention the fact that Mr. Weiner did tell a lie or two.

It’s pretty hard for me to believe that a poster as esteemed and admired for his intellectual honesty and integrity would actually do something like this…

Are you sure you are not thinking of someone else?

Diogenes:

In this thread, you claimed several times that Weiner was the victim of a crime:

That was incorrect, wasn’t it? We now know why he didn’t involve the FBI, don’t we?

Weiner said he doesn’t intend to resign, and I’m guessing he wouldn’t say that if he didn’t figure he had enough support from House Democrats to hang on. Whether he can run for mayor in a couple of years, who knows. If he was just sending pictures of himself over the 'net, that’s extremely stupid, but if he didn’t cheat it’s about 3% better than I thought. Even if he really and truly didn’t sleep with anyone else, I wouldn’t engage in this kind of ‘is this cheating or not?’ behavior if I was married to a woman who has Hillary Clinton on speed dial. One way or another I suspect he’s going to pay and I almost feel a little sorry for him.

But not really. He did something dumb, got caught, lied about it, tried to bullshit his way out of it, and got nailed even worse. He’s pretty fortunate if he still has a political career.

I don’t think Weiner will have to quit. Don’t the Republicans still have that Senator who screwed prostitutes and wore diapers?

I accused nobody in particular, and I said that I was simply taking Weiner at his word for the sake of decency, as we should always do.

You certainly have.

You claimed that the CBS reporter was “hauled off” by the police.

Post the evidence that she was forcibly “hauled” a single inch by anyone that night.

I challenge you to produce a post on this board where you have extended the same courtesy to a Republican politician.

When did a Republican politician claim to be a crime victim?

I will be satisfied, nay, amazed, if you can produce any instance of a Republican politician lying about something and you initially accepting their explanation at face value and defending them (for the sake of decency, as we should always do).

EDIT: Bonus points if you call members of the media attempting to determine the truth “a bunch of jackals”, assholes, hyenas, animals, crazies, etc.

If they’re not claiming to be crime victims, then “the sake of decency” does not apply.

I am unsurprised that you are unable to produce such an example.

So claiming to be the victim of a crime is the key to securing your support? All a politician has to do to cover up any scandal is claim that it is a defamatory (and thus criminal) falsehood promulgated by his enemies, and you will jump to his defense for the sake of decency and viciously denounce any media attempts to determine the truth?

I never said there were any examples. YOU did. You are the one alleging a double standard, you back it up.

I’ll take them at their word until proven otherwise, yes. Why shouldn’t I?

Weiner’s misdeed remains “responding badly to a PR problem.” I hope it does not cost him his seat in Congress. So long as no coercion is involved, I’m not bothered by his flirtations. A matter for him and his wife and the flirtees. And the standards ARE different for Democrats, because they do not typically campaign on the basis of sexual puritanism. I think he’ll be able to hang onto his seat if he wants to … and I hope he continues to give the Republicans hell. Some days he seems to have ALL the spine in the Democratic party. Or maybe it’s balls …

I wish you would all look on the plus side. The world is about to be gifted with about a thousand NEW weiner jokes. That is work all the hassle and then some.
