Conservative Leaning Dopers: Will you support Trump in the general election?

The guy is not a conservative, at least not on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or alternate Saturdays. I mean, let’s face it, Trump has held every position under the sun and there is no way you could identify him as a conservative (with a straight face at least). Still, he is not Hillary (D - 7th circle of hell)*, So the question is will you support him and why?

The chances he pursues a conservative agenda are non-zero but probably pretty small. He has at times supported amnesty, abortion rights, gun control, and even raising taxes, so why would he tow the line as a conservative? Hell, the guy will probably bankrupt the country with the ideas he has presented so far. Granted, many supporters of the Republican party are not conservatives, but are instead evangelicals that care about Christianity in the US and believe we should be a Christian nation, anti-immigration fanatics that want to shut the borders at all costs, racists that want to roll back the civil rights movement, or even xenophobic isolationists that want to eliminate free trade. (Please don’t get me wrong, the Democrats have just as many asshole nutjobs and the Republicans have very many serious people who I repsect and that have very detailed and persuasive ideas about solving very complicated problems - Trump is not one of them). I get the feeling that it is the fringe elements, not the party core, that has given Trump the nomination. So, even though he is not a conservative, and will most likely not pursue a conservative agenda, will you still support him against Hillary?
Poll to follow.

  • Thanks Luci, I stole this from you.

Wow, I take it there are no conservatives on the Dope.

I trust Trump as far as I could throw him. But the only way I would vote for Clinton would be if (A) she were running against Nixon, who was the closest thing to an actual socialist that this country has ever elected, or (B) she were running against Sanders.

It’s Saturday night. They’re out drinking.

Nixon was not in any sense of the word, socialist.

I cannot read this without dissolving into laughter.

If anyone wants to know why the modern GOP is fading into irrelevancy and desperately needs to reinvent itself to remain tethered to this plane of existence, I will show them this post.

Pigasus wept. Robert Anton Wilson thinks you’re too far out. Every surviving member of the Chicago Seven just felt a cold chill. Everyone who has ever heard of the Mundt-Nixon Bill is laughing as hard as I am.

Toe. The expression is “TOE the line.”

That is all.

Which still begs the question. Okay, you won’t vote for Clinton. Will you vote for Trump?

I’ve been told I’m on a “conservative Doper” list, and I intend to vote for Clinton.

Of course, I also voted for Obama, and Kerry, and Gore – and, well, Clinton – but if I somehow count as a conservative Doper, I’ll gladly use this opportunity to argue that Trump has an apparent knack for reacting with hostility but without thinking, which means he’d presumably be a disaster as commander-in-chief regardless of his politics, which means it’s the duty of all who can to vote against him.

RAISES (or LEAVES UNANSWERED) the question.

There are no conclusions being assumed in a premise.

THAT is all.

(It BETTER be all…)

You are aware of the study that show the psychopathology of those who feel the need to make those sorts of corrections, don’t you?

Okay … it dodges and avoids the question …

BTW, I know the origin of “toe the line” but “tow the line” is actually a more apt visual for what is being suggested. The image of lining up toe to the starting line following the rules is less the thought, than being a good tug boat dutifully towing the big ship on.

Seriously, if your only contribution to a discussion is going to be grammar correction you may want to consider whether or not you should contribute.

That is all.

There is no eye-roll in the world hard enough for that. What do you geniuses call price controls, if not socialistic?

Here are Nixon’s own words.

I thought I made that clear, but I guess not. I will be voting for Trump as the lesser evil.

Sounds like he was more of a chipper. A little socialism, on the weekend, at parties… nothing he can’t handle!

Flyer, you wouldn’t be one of those who scream about “tyranny” every year at tax time, would you?

Re-hashed. Well-trodden, even.

I am the right-leaning apple on the centrist tree that the Republicans merely need raise their arm and pluck.

Since their dysfunction, incoherence, and incompetence have allowed Trump to hijack their party as it self-immolates, I have to vote for Hillary.

And most here know I am no wide-eyed fan of hers.

Thank you. To me not voting FOR Clinton does not necessarily mean voting FOR Trump. The may be large swath who decide to leave President blank, or stay home, or vote Libertarian …

1968 Anno ursus horribilis, The Year of the Grizzly.

The Democratic Party leadership backstabbed and betrayed the anti-war movement. Because they didn’t have the guts to stand up to slurs on their courage and patriotism, so they served up Hubert Humphrey, who had not run, and no one could have voted for.

Was I pissed? To put it mildly. It was my first big boy pants vote, and I voted for Humphrey. Why? Nixon. I have voted against more people than I have voted for, but I will not…not!…not vote. Ever. And I will not turn my vote into a paper airplane for the empty pleasure of empty protest.

It is my duty to vote, and therefore it is my duty to make repulsive choices. Let’s see, cholera or smallpox. Hmmm, well, cholera doesn’t leave scars…

I’m more libertarian then conservative but I still voted. For the first time in my life I’m going to vote for a Democrat. Trump as president scares the hell out of me to the point that I can’t even waste my vote as usual. That is unless it’s looking like a landslide and then I’ll vote libertarian again.

I will vote for Trump – I hope he wins, but I know he will lose.

Allow me to welcome you most cordially to the side of goodness and light.

This certainly seems to be the test of party loyalty. If you’re Republican and vote Trump, then you are one loyal Republican.

But this begs the question: For those of you voting for Trump, are they any Republicans that you could not vote for? Palin, perhaps?
