For everyone that loved Mega Man 9 and Gradius ReBirth, there is another new retro game on WiiWare: Contra ReBirth.
It’s kinda short (only five levels) and much easier than Contra III, but if you loved the series this is a good game for $10. It’s not Mega Man 9 good, but then again, what is?
I’ve been waiting for this. Have you played it, JB? I can’t wait to try it out. I think I will force myself to wait until I get a chance to play it with my brother, though. Contra was like the only thing we ever stopped fighting to do together. To this day I have never played that game alone.
What controller is needed to play this game? I’m going to my brother’s house tomorrow to play, but I only have 1 Gamecube controller, he has 0, and neither one of us have the Wii “classic controller.”
Wow, it was short indeed. We beat it in about an hour and a half. But then, my brother pointed out that he figured we could run through the original Contra in about 30 minutes back in the day.
It was indeed fun as hell. And how hard was Contra III?! This was challenging.
Was the story supposed to be completely incomprehensible?
One of my few complaints was that the final boss was just about the easiest boss, and the ending is really anti-climatic. I wasn’t 100% sure that was the end (but kinda figured since we killed the heart first), and it just said “stage cleared” when we beat him.
I kinda wish it had been a $5 game for its length, but I guess it was probably worth $10.
Are there any more games like this on deck? I heard something about an Earthworm Jim remake?
JB - do you think that this is going to become more and more common? These new, updated retro(ish) games on WiiWare? I’m not one that usually knocks Nintendo for “lack of gamer gamez!11!” or anything, but I think this fills that hole in quite a bit - it caters directly to today’s gamer’s sense of nostalgia, while providing a new user experience.
Or do you think the Wii Punch-Out!!! route is a better one - offering a full title (and priced) update to a classic game?
Konami just had Castlevania ReBirth rated by the ESRB, so that should be added to the WiiWare service soon. And Nintendo has New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the first Mario sidescroller on a console in nearly 20 years, coming out sometime this Fall as a disc-based full game.
And with the success of Mega Man 9, Capcom has been hinting that more stuff like that is on the way. Though really, what’s Street Fighter IV but a gussied up 2D fighter?
Contra III is brutal. Contra: Hard Corps is worse. Compared to both, Contra ReBirth is a cakewalk compared to both (especially with unlimited continues). But it is reasonably difficult on Hard.
Did you beat the game on Easy or Normal? On Easy, you don’t fight the true final boss, which I thought was quite challenging.
They are making a new Earthworm Jim, but it’s going to be a straight remake of the original, not a “new retro” title like the ReBirth games or Mega Man 9.
We played on normal for awhile but then switched to easy because we were trading continues with my sis in law and she couldn’t hang. I guess I need to run through it again.
