I’ve had a Wii for a few months now, but due to lack of time I’ve still only got the Wii Sports game that came with it.
Can anyone recommend a decent Wii game to buy next? One of the reasons I went for the Wii over a PS3 or XBOX is I want the games to be simple enough for any of my friends/family to be able to pick up and enjoy immediately, so I don’t want any of those games that take 15 button combinations to turn the character around.
Any ideas? So far I’ve been told Resident Evil and Tiger Woods, but I’m not especially into golf and I don’t see how the controller would come into its own in a shooting game.
Sword fighting with the controller sounds fun, if there is such a game?
Really? You don’t see how pointing directly at something and pulling the trigger, kind of like a real gun, would be a much more natural and engaging feeling than using a control bad with a joystick to slowly move a cursor around the screen before pressing a button to fire?
Wii Play is quite similar to Wii Sports, and comes with an extra remote. Excite Truck is a pretty good racing game, and it’s quite easy to pick up and play for new players. I haven’t played Mario Strikers, but from what I hear it might be what you’re looking for as well.
MP3 and RE4 are both excellent games, but they don’t offer much in terms of pick-up-and-play for new or casual players.
You wrote what I was thinking…Anyhow, I think Metroid Prime 3 would be a great example of excellent implementation of the Wii controller in an FPS. RE4 is the more fun game (in my opinion), but I like the controls of MP3 better.
Anyhow, if you want games exploiting the different possibilities of the Wii remote, I would say either Rayman Raving Rabbids or Warioware should be your choice. Personally, I can’t stand Warioware, but a lot of people love it and you get to use the remote in all sorts of wacky ways.
If you want casual pick-up-and-play I highly recommend Excite Truck. It’s designed in the same style as the old NES game Excitebike, but with so much more. You get points for air time, hitting rings in midair, smashing into other trucks, drifting, almost but not quite hitting trees, and more. There are little things on the track that, when you run into them, change the landscape as you drive. You steer by turning the Wii remote like you would a steering wheel. It’s great fun, especially for multiple players.
Metroid Prime 3 is a great example of the Wii controller in an FPS, but as mentioned above it does not lend itself so well to the casual gamer. For that matter, Zelda: Twilight Princess is also an excellent FPS (First Person Swordsman ), but the same objection holds.
I second shy guy’s recommendation of the Virtual Console. For 5 or 10 bucks you can be playing Super Mario Bros or Street Fighter or any of dozens of other classic games.
How about Rayman: Raving Rabbids? (Your arms are likely to get tired at first though.)
For the Virtual Console, did you notice that they released Japan’s SMB2 (“the lost levels”)? You may have seen it on the SNES with Super Mario All-Stars, but this version looks like it has the original graphics.
And very much fits the “simple enough for any of my friends/family to be able to pick up and enjoy immediately” requirement. Great implementation of the Wiimote.
Hey, is there a game similar to MarioKart? I’m trying to get the Sheckstress to play more, and a driving game would really do it. The only problem is, she doesn’t like blood and guts in games, so it has to be kid-friendly.
Though I haven’t played it myself, I imagine Super Mario Party 8 would be a great party game. Wii sports was fun for all over 2 days.
I’ve played Zelda, which was excellent, with excellent swordplay. The Darknuts are really, really really hard fights, much worse than the big bosses. For the first time ever in a computer game, the sword play felt *real * (note, I used to fence for real when younger).
RE4 is Zelda with gore. The feel of the game is very similar, and since I’m a Zelda fan since NES, I enjoyed it. However, since I got the Chicago Typewriter, it isn’t much of a challenge anymore.
Super Paper Mario is fun and whimsical, but a bit short on the gameplay.
MP3:C hasn’t been released over here yet, but I pre-ordered and from what I remember from the IGN review, it’s not only a great game for the Wiimote, but the whole structure of the game is unlike any other, e.g. you get all the weapons from the start, there’s no chasing after the bigger gun to kill the bigger baddie, which is sooo comon in videogames.
Oddly enough, I was just hanging out over at ign.com wondering about MarioKart. Looks like the release for MarioKart Wii is set for 1st Quarter of 08. So we’ll have to wait a little longer.
If you’re willing to shell out for a couple controllers and a memory card, there’s always Double Dash for the GC. I wouldn’t suggest it with more than two players though (just gets too easy), and I’ve never been a fan of the GC controller.
Charlie, MP3 does have weapon upgrades, but it’s far more a strategy/puzzle game than a shooter. You won’t run into any baddies that you don’t already have the equipment to handle though–the upgrades are as much for exploring as for killing. It is annoying though, having to scan enemies that are shooting at you to figure out how to kill them. And yes, Mario Party 8 is pretty good. It makes decent use of the abilities of the controller for variety, instead of the “mash A/B” that some previous incarnations were plagued with. Even if one game is eerily similar to giving a 5-second handjob. It’s a great party game, and easy to pick up if you’ve ever held a controller before.
I recently got RE4 and I love it so far. It’s been a blast. Last night I finally got “Call of Duty 3”, though, and although I’ve only played it for a little while, I didn’t care for the control scheme AT ALL. It seems at this point to be very disorienting, which isn’t helped by the fact that the first playable scene is an extremely chaotic battle.
Mario Strikers Charged is an excellent game. I’m not quite sure why it got lackluster reviews from gamespot and IGN. It has that nice combo of simple yet deep gameplay, its fun, and has online play.
I’ve been working through Zelda for a while, and I find it fantastic - I enjoy Wii Sports, but Zelda sucked me in. In fact, I’m getting ready to play for a while.
If sword fights are your thing, I’d recommend Bleach: Shattered Blade and whatever the current Naruto game for the Wii is. Both are based on anime, but I really don’t think you need be familiar with the show to enjoy them.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone - Sounds like there’s a few titles that keep coming up! I’m going to make a short list and buy the first one I see in the shop at lunch.
You know, it never occurred to me that you’d be able to point and shoot “duck hunt” style. :o
Can’t wait for the Star Wars game to be released. The Wii seems almost made for light sabers!
