Having recently acquired a Wii system and being a fan of the Half-Life PC games, Need for Speed, and a few others,… I would like to know what you think is the best game you’ve played so far on the Wii.
Could be anything from sports to fantasy.
Um. Mario Galaxy, I guess.
You may end up disappointed.
Ouch. You have the wrong system for those types of games. I’ve not liked the Wii much for the first two years of owning it.
BUT…
I am really liking Mario Kart Wii now. Smash Bros is decent. Mario Galaxy is good. Other than that don’t know what to tell you. Metroid was well liked though I didn’t really care for it.
My husband really enjoys Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Resident Evil 4.
The stuff I like doesn’t tend to be rated as “kickass” exactly - Wii Fit, Rayman’s Raving Rabbids, Sam & Max Episode 1, Lego Star Wars.
I got the system for the kids, but I was wondering if there was anything out there that would captivate an adult in a role playing type of game, I guess.
I enjoy the basic Wii games, got Play and Sport and am satisfied so far with them.
Resident Evil 4 and Mario Galaxy are some of the best games ever produced, and for completely different reasons.
Resident Evil 4 is simply a tour de force that few games can match. It’s oozing with atmosphere and is genuinely one of the scariest games I’ve played. Not sure if that’s your cup of tea, but it’s riveting from beginning to end and features some of the best and most balanced gameplay I’ve ever seen. Plus it’s only $20 now!
Mario Galaxy, on the other hand, is simply delightful the entire way through. It’s so damn fun to jump around the environment and even orbit around the planets. It’s mario in space, and it’s awesome.
Forgot about RE4. It is a really good game. On PS2 it was at least. I’m sure its at least as good on Wii.
I will also second someone above’s suggestion of Metroid Prime 3, a game very much in a similar spirit of Half-Life.
I played it when it was first released on the Gamecube so I didn’t pick it up for the PS2 or Wii. It is a fantastic game and I enjoyed it all the way through. Most of the reviews for the Wii version say it is the best of the 3 because the Wii remote uses IR control to aim the gun (even easier headshots!).
No More Heroes would also fit the OP. It is usually in the running for best Wii game of 2008 on several gaming websites. Of course, that’s not saying much for Wii’s 2008.
Not only that, but it also offers Classic Controller options (if you don’t like the Wiimote aiming), 16x9 widescreen and all of the bonus features of the PS2 versions.
The Wii version is the hands down best version of RE4.
I enjoyed Super Paper Mario a lot. Twilight Princess was pretty fun too, but it didn’t enthrall me like it seemed to with most people.
I really enjoy Tiger Woods Golf for the Wii, it’s a great group game.
I’ve been this close to getting it for the Wii. Do you golf? How many courses does it have?
RE4 is fine, but (and I’m not someone particularly enamored with the zombie genre), it doesn’t hold a candle to a game like Silent Hill 2. Still, it’s one of my favorite Wii games. The best Wii game, by several orders of magnitude for me, is Mario Galaxy. Keep in mind, though, that I haven’t bought a Wii game since about August.
A related question: are there any games for the Wii that make good use of the remote for swordfighting?
I just got a Wii too. Secondhand, and it came with Super Paper Mario, Zelda and Mario Galaxy.
I chose to do Super Paper Mario first and it has been fun. I think the skill level is slightly aimed towards kids but I think it’s very clever and it hasn’t gotten old or frustrating yet.
My buddy is an avid golfer and the only game he has is the Tiger Woods Golf. So I can’t personally recommend it but I can give a recommendation from him.
I don’t golf IRL, but when I was in Iraq I played the XBOX 360 of Tiger Woods Golf every night for a year (sad on so many levels). The XBOX version had better graphics, and the physics seemed more realistic, but the Wii version blows it away because it is just so much damn fun.
It has a dozen courses or so, plenty not to get bored. IIRC, the XBOX version had more courses and with the graphics, it was almost photo realistic. My friend has played some of the courses in the game and said the presentation in the game comes close to the real thing.
None really do a 1:1 movement with swords, which disappoints me. They claim to be coming out with an addon that allows you to do so, but considering the control gimmick that should have been in 8 o’clock, day one. The best you can really get is shaking the remote to swing the sword, and positioning might change your stance.
As for Kick-Ass Wii games, No More Heroes kicked my ass all over the place. It’s not a perfect game, but it’s psychotic and fun. (It’s a sword-using game, but the controls that only remotely resemble using a sword is holding the remote up for a High stance and lowering it for a Low stance. Plus there’s a baseball minigame which is amusing.)
Ouch. My problem with the Tiger Woods franchise is that they bogart the courses. I still want to play Harbor Town! They release new ones every year (well, mostly).
The Wii Fit Balance board is an amazing piece of technology. It would be way too cool if they could figure out how to incorporate that with the controllers to show real sword fighting (or light sabre dueling, if you will) on screen.
