Controversial encounters between law-enforcement and civilians - the omnibus thread #2

Based on the info presented in the article, can we even tell that the two facts are connected?

“Police officer tries to shoot dog. Some time later, he is shot in the leg.”

Here’s the quote:

“after being shot in the leg while trying to shoot a dog.” The phrase “while trying” seems to establish the temporal connection between the two events.

But we don’t know who (or what) was wielding the gun that discharged the bullet that hit him in the leg.

I’m hoping it was the dog.

“The bitch shot me!”

“As a police officer, he’s trained to deescalate. He did not do what he was trained to do.”

Judging from all the times when police officers have shot or otherwise assaulted “suspects”, I’d like a cite for her belief that police officers are trained to deescalate.

There is some indication that officer-trainees receive lessons in deescalation. I mean, look how many times they fail to kill decent law-abiding caucasion-types. It seems to be a skill they are taught. But, if the shift captain (or whatever that person is called) says “When you profile a suspect based on these here criteria, escalate”, it will not be evident that they possess that skill, are at all adept at it, or are inclined to do so. After all, it takes longer, is more difficult and is less viscerally satisfying.

The police chief of Farmington Hills, Michigan apologizes for using target practice targets in the form of black men.

Sorry, but an apology doesn’t cut it.

I would ask how fucking clueless people could be, but then there’s this thread.

I’m willing to give him 1.5 internet points for an actual apology and acceptance of responsibility - he didn’t even mention “anyone who may have been offended”. Plus, he probably was not in charge of purchasing or even approving the targets (on the other hand, assuming he uses the range himself he should have noticed the problem).

TL,DR:
Arrestee transported to station in van with no seatbelt. Driver brakes hard “to avoid collision,” arrestee breaks neck and is partially paralyzed. Piss-poor treatment follows, including manhandling that may have made his injuries worse. He may never walk again.

We’ve seen this movie before:

Just … horrifying.

Akron police release ‘heartbreaking’ footage of Jayland Walker being shot up to 60 times: Live updates (msn.com)

Yeah. You guys are heartbroken. Sure.

This is just nauseating.

It is a difficult one, though. There is to be a part of the earlier footage that includes a bang and flash, suggesting that Jaylen had fired a shot from his car, and the lying bastards police claim to have found a gun in his car. He scrambled out of a vehicle that had not stopped moving. And he was wearing a ski mask in mid summer, which is more than slightly odd.

That the officers felt the need to unleash an average dozen rounds apiece is beyond ridiculous, when they had nothing to go on from the outset. It was a traffic violation, ffs. But it was a black man at night, and that makes it scary.

Well, this is nice,

if’n I saw someone walking toward a school carrying a rifle and I had the means to make him stop, I would do my best to make him stop. But, I am not a police officer, so I have a hard time respecting White-rights.

you might be going head to head with Proud Boys or some other nut group who are just being dicks and not wanting to kill kids. Harder to tell these days.

The key phrase there was “if I had the means to make them stop” – if it was 30 Prod Boys and I only had ten rounds, it would be a tough choice. And anyway, those guys rarely carry rifles.

Stop making me rethink my position on high capacity magazines.
