I just received a letter from the IRS stating I owe the government $8000 for underpayment on my taxes for the 2004 filing year (filed in 2005). It lists jobs that I had at the time and gambling winnings (around $20,000 from one job and about $3500 in winnings).
When I did my taxes I gave a copy of everything I had and received in the mail to the accountant. Now I get this letter.
The easy answer is contact the accounting firm that did my taxes and get the copies they have on file. That is just too easy, as they went out of business and there is no telling how long it would be to track down my files.
To fight this my current accountant told me they need me to get the copies since they did not do my taxes for that year. How do I go about getting my stuff from 2004?
Send Form 4506T (PDF) to the IRS and indicate in checkbox number 8 that you need a transcript of your W-2s and 1099s and whatnot. It’ll take a few weeks.
Huh. My accountant gives me back all of my stuff every year, plus my copies of what he sent to the IRS on my behalf. Sounds like your tax guy was a real winner…
You’ve never had copies of the forms you signed? Yikes…
I had copies but I can not find them. I am sure they are somewhere, but it is kind of hard to locate them with all of the moving I have done in the past few years.
