Cornelis Vreeswijk - singer/poet/drunk - Swedish Dopers?

I just saw a documentary about Cornelis Vreeswijk. Born in Ijmuiden, the Netherlands, buried in Stockholm, Sweden.

A poet, singer and songwriter who died of cancer of the liver at 50. I searched for - and love his lyrics. Very raw and controversial.
According to the documentary, he was pretty famous in Sweden, and to a degree in Denmark. The Swedish chaiman of the board of the Cornelis Vreeswijk society said he was known for his sly lyrics, mocking the establishment, but also for his sensitive poetry, bringing the life of the outcast to the public.

Beautiful.

I’d love to know if he’s still famous in Sweden & Denmark.

Thank you.

Yes, still VERY famous, critically acclaimed, popular and held very dearly by the public. There have been a number of post-humously released albums from him and some tribute albums featuring Swedish pop/rock singers interpreting his work.

Thank you, RealTronic. Someone said that if he had been English spoken, he would have been world famous. Also: They said his Swedish lyrics were far better than his dutch. On account he left for Sweden early in his life. It’s a pity he died of booze, women and tax problems, huh.
