Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Thread - 2020 Breaking News

1,431,706 confirmed infections
82,080 dead
302,150 recovered

In the US:

400,412 confirmed infections
12,854 dead
21,674 recovered

Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:

That’s 1,913 dead in one day in the US, right?

Is the worldwide ‘recovered’ statistic getting stale from lack of followup? Will all those cases go into the dead or recovered bucket or into a third “unknown but not dead” bucket (and is that happening now?)?

Ugh. World-o-meter says 1,970 for 4/7. And now 16 more so 1,986…

Problem is, I can’t just turn off THIS kind of news completely while I read a book. (Like during elections) I was reading Richard Matheson. Yeah, yeah, vampire. Yeah, yeah, button, click over to death count while reading same sentence over and over… and the horror stories are somehow bland all of a sudden. (Og bless Matheson, anyway)

The zip code in this area with the largest number of cases is related to a church.

This doesn’t seem like a good idea at all: CDC weighs loosening guidelines for some exposed to virus

So, California orders millions of masks, etc., and plans to share them with other states as needed.

America! Fuck, yeah!

If they can get them.

It’s not a good idea if you send everyone home, either - then there’s no one to run a clinic or a grocery store.

I’m serious about that - let’s say someone with active covid walks through the store where I work. Oops! Isolate everyone in the store who might have come into contact with the virus, right? Well, that’s likely 1/3 of the store staff. If it happens twice more then the store HAS to shut down because there’s no one left to work there.

Same for a firestation - let’s say they drag three people out of a burning home and whoops! One was isolating due to a case of covid. OK, send everyone who answered that call home - wait a minute, how many fire fighters are left now?

Rinse and repeat for cops, clinics, hospitals, etc.

Ideally you send home anyone exposed to the virus. In reality, you can’t do that because otherwise essential services cease to happen.

We already know this isn’t going to be good. Got to think in terms of preventing the absolutely terrible. People stepping up to help each other is a good thing, so even a casket has a silver lining.

Its why they call me “Mr. Sunshine”.

Today in Austria:

[ul]

[li] The foreign and tourism ministers have advised Austrians that it may be impossible, difficult, or at least inadvisable to take holidays abroad this summer, since many countries may still be suffering heavily from the pandemic, and even those that have recovered may still be imposing restrictions on travellers from Austria. The tourism minister instead advises Austrians to take their holidays within Austria, in part because this should be more practical, and in part because Austria’s devastated tourism industry (which represents 16% of Austria’s GDP) needs help recovering. The Austrian Hoteliers’ Association is projecting that, in the best case, they will see a drop in sales this summer of 40 to 60%. Hotels and restaurants will gradually be permitted to reopen starting on 15 May, though the Chamber of Commerce fears that the government will at that time only allow restaurants to remain open until mid-afternoon or early evening, and has urged the government to allow late-night dining.[/li]
[li] The minister of education has announced plans for this year’s school-leaving exams. I’m a bit fuzzy on what special accommodations are being made, mostly because I have no knowledge of how such exams are conducted when there isn’t a deadly pandemic raging. My admittedly shaky understanding is as follows: First, the usual two-week exam preparation period has been extended to three weeks. Second, the exams will take place, in person, starting on 25 May, but with all students and proctors wearing face coverings and maintaining a healthy distance from one another. Third, the exams will be written only, and a student’s final grade for a class will be a weighted combination of their final exam score and their term coursework. An exception to this rule exists for those subjects that normally use oral exams: here, no exams will take place, and the student’s final grade will be solely on the basis of their regular term assignments. Fourth, students who fail the exams will have the opportunity to retake them in June after remedial education.[/li]
[li] In contrast to Donald Trump’s threats to withdraw future financial support to the World Health Organization, Austria today announced its intention to provide the WHO with an additional €2 million in funding. Of this funding, €1 million is earmarked for health programs in Africa and the Near East, with a focus on Iran and Palestine.[/li]
[li] According to Austria’s central bank, the coronavirus crisis will damage the country’s economy to the tune of €11 billion.[/li]
[li] The city of Vienna has been monitoring traffic throughout the city. They found that car traffic sank 52% between the beginning of March and the beginning of April. The amount of bicycle traffic is also down.[/li]
[li] According to market research surveys, everyone stuck at home in Austria is watching a lot more TV. On average, people are now watching 269 minutes of TV per day, compared to 199 minutes per day for the same period last year.[/li]
[li] Another market research survey, this time on the subject of personal finances, reveals that the pandemic has had negative financial consequences for 40% of adults in Austria. 23% of adults have had to draw on their personal savings to survive.[/li]
[li] Yet another survey shows that 2/3 of Austrians believe that Austria is handling the coronavirus crisis better than other countries. (Meanwhile, nearby countries such as Switzerland and France are extending and strengthening their own lockdowns.)[/li]
[li] The Czech Republic has announced that as of 14 April, cross-border commuters from the Czech Republic who work in critical jobs (health care, energy, etc.) in Austria will no longer be required to quarantine themselves for two weeks upon their return.[/li]
[li] Current statistics: 12,941 confirmed infections, 273 deaths, 4512 recovered. Infections are increasing at a rate of 2.5% (averaged over the past four days).[/li][/ul]

Masks are now required of customers shopping in LA.

BREAKING: Kansas Republican Leadership (Wagle, Denning, Ryckman, Hawkins, Finch) just revoked Gov. Kelly’s executive order banning large gatherings.

This on the day Kansas reported its largest single day of #COVID19 deaths.

Navada just announced 22,547 new cases today. Before that their total number sat at 2,087. Can anyone explain what happened here?

New York has surpassed Spain and Italy in deaths per capita:

NY, 319 / million;
Spain, 314 / million
Italy, 292 / million

(per worldometer)

I am shocked to see this. Curious about why as well.

Considering their total positive cases is greater than their total number of tests, I’m going with reporting error.

ETA: Yes, if you follow the source link, you’ll see that the 24K cases is actually the number of tests performed. Total positives is 2,318.

And the “reasoning” on this would be…?

“In our view, Kansas statute and the Kansas Constitution’s Bill of Rights each forbid the governor from criminalizing participation in worship gatherings by executive order."
