Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Thread - 2020 Breaking News

The Trump Admin dumped life-saving #PPE into the commercial market instead of giving it directly to states, creating a bidding war.
That’s why Kushner referred to the Federal stockpile as “OUR”, instead of the states. He was referring to himself and Trump!

Sorry, on my phone, and links are hard. But it will come up if you Google it.

Jaysus needs prayers.

Well, it also has to have benefits that outweigh the likelihood and potential severity of the side effects. And that’s the part we don’t know about when it comes to Dolt45’s favorite drug.

Sure, if someone’s already at the point where they’re circling the drain, give 'em anything that has some remote chance of helping because the side effects don’t matter if they’re gonna die anyway. But people taking it en masse to forestall getting infected with the virus to begin with - there we really don’t know if we’d make people better or worse on average.

I notice that the CDC is now recommending the use of cloth face masks. Since 5 days ago, but I didn’t see any mention of it here.

To prevent the spread of disease from asymptomatic carriers. Note that some research indicates that wearing a cloth mask may may you more likely to catch disease. Which seems to present something of a moral dilema…

Yes, it was a pretty dramatic shift and communicated through many media sources. So I assume no one felt the need to bring it up. Now, all of a sudden, there is public shame (and potential punishment in some places) for not wearing some kind of mask.

I have a feeling this is a result of Trumps stream-of-consciousness rambling about how if hospitals run out of masks, you can just use a scarf which works just as well. Press conference maybe a week ago.

So once he said that, CDC had to change to back him up on it.

Church will still be there, you can go back, Jesus can deal with it.

No, Canada’s top health officer is also recommending it now. I think they just bowed to public pressure in some ways. So many people screaming “come on, it’s gotta help a little!” and it probably doesn’t make much difference so just let people do it.

I have a feeling we may still be wearing masks long after things have (sort of) gotten back to “normal.” It’s a whole new market-- designer masks, masks that promote your school/favorite team, message masks (like message t-shirts)… the marketplace is a wondrous thing…

And the world being what it is, mask fetish and mask porn. Rule 34 always wins.

Yeah, I’ve seen some COVID19 porn both serious and comical.

“Give me liberty and give me death!”

– problem is, they’ll be giving some other people death as well.

Plus which, I expect some of the people going to church will be doing so because they’re being lied to about the risks.

The study I saw, which claims to be the only prospective controlled study of the use of cloth face masks, compared using cloth face masks to using surgical masks to “standard practice, which includes wearing a mask” in a hospital in Vietnam. People in the control group used “whatever you usually use”, which was apparently a mix of cloth and paper masks, not always the same thing every day.

They didn’t have enough people who wore NO mask to draw any conclusions at all. Unless you wear the same mask day after day without ever cleaning it, or share it with your friends, it’s really unlikely that wearing a cloth mask increases the the risk of catching a disease.

My bold.

There’s that dad-gummed passive voice! No actor. No one responsible. Let us BANISH the passive voice when it is important to know WHO IS ACTING.

WHO is lying to them? And are they questioning a directive that might make the difference between life and death? Or just swallowing that worm whole because Mama, Daddy, Pastor, <fill in the blank> would never lie to us! It is their responsibility to research and seek out the truth. Unless, of course, their Belief System forbids questioning authority. :dubious:

Slate has been having two ER doctors in New York record their thoughts at the end of their shifts for the past two weeks. It’s a very personal and important view into what’s happening on the front lines, something that can be lost in the casualty counts. Week two especially is deeply affecting.
