Thanks.
Hawaii has eight major islands. Las Vegas is so popular here that it is routinely referred to as the ninth island. Several airlines offer nonstop flights between the two all day long, or at least they did before this crisis. I know lots of people here in Hawaii who make several trips a year to Vegas, most of them elderly but not all. It is true that quite a few of the Hawaii cases seem to have been contracted in Vegas.
Oahu today announced an extension of the stay-at-home order through May 31. Dunno about the rest of the state. Hawaii as a whole has 592 cases and 12 deaths as of today.
Hardly worth mentioning I suppose. Still, I note that yesterday 2,341 Americans died of this disease. My list starts (for some reason) on 17 March. One that day 23 Americans died of this disease. That is to say we have one hundred times more deaths from when we started five weeks ago.
Colibri may I say that I honestly admire how level handed you are being “during this very scary time”. Seriously, you are holding up so very well, please know that at least one person here has noticed.
Does anyone know if its possible to mail beer from the states to Panama? I think our mod could use some liquid support if possible.
Ill second this. Amazing job of keeping cool under pressure.
It’s bad in how it is infected so many who work in the meat packing plants. Many have had to close.
This hurts farmers and producers down the line who have fewer choices of where to take their hogs for slaughter. These plants that are closing handle about 20%-30% of the nations meat.
What I’ve heard is they employ many immigrants and have had a poor safety and sanitation record for years.
Big question is could the virus be transmitted thru raw meat?
The fatality rate varies wildly in the US if the new US map by John Hopkins is accurate. I find the colors counterintuitive but the lighter the blue the worse the fatality rate is, and once I figured that out after clicking on some very low fatality counties in my area, I clicked on many of the lightest blue counties in NY, NJ, CT and MA. Unsurprisingly there are a bunch of NY and NJ counties at 7-9% fatality rates. And there are several counties in CT and MA reporting 10-15% fatality rates. Most likely because only the sickest are getting tested, but it’s ** a lot** higher than I ever expected to see outside of NY.
Where have you heard this?
What map JH map are we discussing? The moldy JH map I have a link to still has a dot on each county, little helpful information. Click on a dot, whee. If it was mentioned upthread, forgive me.
2,638,024 total cases
184,235 dead
721,734 recovered
In the US:
849,092 total cases
47,681 dead
84,050 recovered
Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:
Over 15 times more deadly than 9/11.
CMC fnord!
Can we stop always remembering now, or is it too soon?
Crafty how you couched your real point in a sandwich of words.
Some odd government decisions here in Hawaii.
Beaches are now closed (state owned) for running and walking - but - you can still go swimming/surfing/fishing:confused: Seems you can run or walk but have to be splashing water???
And now for another odd edict; they are opening the parks 1 May, social distancing applies to other than immediate family groups.
Weird beach closing followed by opening parks:confused:
Well, the thing is, you can’t really close the ocean. As for opening the parks, it is part of a gradual reopening and in conjunction with increased testing. We’re down to single-digit new cases per day now, and if it looks like that is going back up, then they can close them again. If the situation continues to improve, then maybe some other restrictions can be relaxed. I actually agree with every measure you’ve pointed out.
This is true.
Not that the hog slaughtering business has ever been pretty, see Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle
At this point the answer is “no”. Subject to change with new data but up til now that seems to be the consensus.
OK.
20 times more deadly than Pearl Harbor on 12/7/41
If you eat raw meat. Particularly if some accidentally went down the wrong way.
DO NOT engage in vigorous physical exercise while eating raw meat from an infected facility!
I’ve not seen specific tests, but COVID-19 can probably last a couple of days at least on frozen or refrigerated raw meat, and if you touch infected raw meat, and then touch your eyes or nose, or inhale the meat, you may become infected with something. Always wash your hands after handling raw meat!
There are no known cases of infection from eating raw meat, and the stomach is a pretty hostile environment for viruses. But that doesn’t mean it can’t happen: certainly there are known cases of gastro-intestinal COVID-19 infection, and it’s not clear what the path of transmission was.
I believe you dropped a “not” out of that: “Seems you cannot run or walk, but…”.
I hope the social distancing is well-practiced when the parks open.
It’s a new map view, maybe a week old. Go here, then click on the Fatality Rate tab under the image of the map. Once you click on a county, there’s a thumbnail you can click on for more info about the demographics etc. too.
